Crimson Desert: A player flies all the way into space, and the developers are surprisingly well-prepared for it

Kliff becomes an astronaut in Crimson Desert, and there’s actually plenty to see out in space.

Developer Pearl Abyss seems to have anticipated almost every crazy idea players might come up with in Crimson Desert. At some point during development, someone must have asked, “What actually happens if players fly about 100,000 meters above Earth?” And everyone was like, “Yeah, we definitely need to figure something out for that.”

We don’t know if that’s exactly how it went down, but thanks to some creative players, we know the end result.

Ground Control to Major Kliff

Getting Kliff into orbit isn’t actually that hard, as YouTuber Nassem demonstrates in a video.

The ability“Aerial Stab”catapults you a short distance in any direction. So why not upward? With amod for infinite stamina, you can reach an altitude of 100,000 meters.

In the video, Nassem documents his ascent and makes a few interesting observations.

  • At an altitude of 15 kilometers, cloud formations become visible below you
  • Starting at 20 kilometers, a large ring around the continent can be seen
  • At 25 kilometers, you can see the entire continent of Pywell
  • The first stars become visible at 45 kilometers
  • After 63 kilometers, a visible galaxyappears
  • At 80 kilometers, not only a large galaxy but alsonumerous other small galaxiescan be seen
  • At an altitude of 100 kilometers, the continent below is barely visible, but stars and galaxies sparkle all around you

But thatwasn’t all. The stars around you even move just as they would in reality.

Additionally, as you fall into the depths—since there is no such thing as weightlessness—there is a heat effect, similar tothat seen during reentry into the atmosphereof spaceships or other objects.

Whether this is intentional or just a random effect caused by Kliff’s lantern is unclear. However, the glow is already visible in space, so it doesn’t seem to be entirely well-thought-out.

It’s surprising that developer Pearl Abyss went to the trouble of investing time in something that essentially has no gameplay benefit or might not even have been discovered. One could speculate whether a DLC might eventually lead into space. However, there is no official information on this. Perhaps they just wanted to live up to the name of their own engine, which is called Black Space.
