Developer Firaxis is currently addressing one of the biggest criticisms of the latest installment in its global strategy game series.

Opinions were divided on the release of Civilization 7. While many reviews said it just needed some fine-tuning, there were also some tests that were harsher in their assessment of the new direction taken by the strategy game. One of these innovations was not very well received by many players.

Instead of leading a civilization selected at the beginning through the ages of human history, you had to change your people in between. However, this could soon be a thing of the past.

End of the obligation to switch?

In a detailed blog post, Firaxis discusses the upcoming content and updates for Civ 7. Two points were particularly emphasized.

Currently, internal testing is underway to see if players can play a civilization from start to finish again. This also means that you can choose any Civ from any era at the start of a game.

According to Firaxis, this is the “feature most requested by players.” They are also experimenting with “some dramatic changes to the legacy paths and victory conditions.” However, they are not providing any more specific details.

Fans are cautiously optimistic

Although Firaxis is currently only testing a possible return to the mechanics of its predecessors, players are  on Reddit are optimistic that Civ 7 is heading in the right direction.

“Finally! I just want Civ 6-style gameplay with the new features from Civ 7!” – rebentoski

“Looks like buying Civ VII is back on the agenda, guys!” – Simayi78

“Just like all six previous games, which date back almost 30 years. But game testing is difficult and time-consuming, so no pressure.” – RosalinaTheWatcher51

“Civ Switching is an interesting idea, and I wish I liked it, but unfortunately it destroys the more compelling idea of building a civilization that stands the test of time.” – MrEMannungton

What is still unclear, but is very much on players’ minds, is how this change could be implemented in Civilization 7. Will Civ Switching be removed completely, become optional, or become a completely separate new mode? It will probably be a while before Firaxis answers these questions.
