Following the success of Baldur’s Gate 3, its predecessor is set to receive a remake, with a key figure from the original Bioware team pulling the strings.

Update from June 2, 2026:We reached out to Kevin Martens, one of the alleged developers of the Baldur’s Gate 2 remake. The response was as expected: “I cannot comment on speculation or rumors.” Previously, Hasbro had also responded to an inquiry with a “No comment” message.

Baldur’s Gate 4 probably won’t be coming anytime soon, but there are nowrumors about the return of another installmentof the role-playing game series.

Following the massive success of the third installment, the editorial team at PC Gamer reports, citing its own sources, that the legendary predecessor Baldur’s Gate 2 is set to receive a comprehensive remaster after well over two decades.

BG2 Remake: What Do We Know?

The remake appears to be in development directly with D&D rights holder Wizards of the Coastand is reportedly set to revive the glory days of the Infinity Engine in the modern era, presumably with updated graphics and other enhancements.

Anyone hoping forBaldur’s Gate 3to continue the work ofdeveloper Larian Studiosis likely to be disappointed: The Belgian developers are apparently not involved in this project and are instead focusing entirely on their new role-playing gameDivinity.

According to PC Gamer editor Fraser Brown, it is likely that both of the early Infinity Engine games from Bioware and Black Isle Studios will receive a remake, including the originalBaldur’s Gatefrom 1998.

A Bioware veteran is reportedly involved

According to the report, Kevin Martens is pulling the strings behind the scenes. The former co-lead designer of Baldur’s Gate 2 at Bioware is said to have returned for the remake. Martens worked on milestones such as Neverwinter Nights, Jade Empire, and Mass Effect until 2009 and later served as lead designer for Diablo 3 at Blizzard.

He is currently listed as Creative Lead & Director, Multiplayer Systems & Content Expert at Archetype Entertainment, a subsidiary studio of Wizards of the Coast. The studio made headlines in late 2025 because the lead designer and studio head of its first game, the sci-fi RPG Exodus, threw in the towel before its release.

The parent company of Wizards of the Coast and Kevin Martens have commented on the rumors. Hasbro stated that it does not comment on speculation. Martens used the same wording in a personal LinkedIn message to us.

How realistic is all of this?

Currently, only PC Gamer is reporting on the alleged remake—and even in that article, the staff is asking for help with their research. Given these facts, should you already be looking forward to the new Baldur’s Gate 2?

Assessment by Kevin
I’m a huge fan of Baldur’s Gate 2. I actually like the second installment even better than the universally beloved BG3. So I was pretty stunned by the news that WotC is reportedly planning a remake. But the more I think about it, the more sense it makes. Larian has already said they won’t be working on the series anymore, and the D&D publishers’ new video game initiative could use another strong draw. So why not capitalize on the hype surrounding Baldur’s Gate 3 and release a stylish remake in the style of its successor?

Baldur’s Gate 2 still has a lot to offer today: the story, dialogue, and companions are top-notch, the quests are deep and surprising, the music is epic, and the combat and puzzles are iconic. And just how much would all of that benefit from modern user-friendliness and sleek graphics! So yes, I would buy the remake.

However, there’s still far too little information available for me to take these rumors seriously at this point. I consider the folks at PC Gamer to be honest and dedicated journalists, but even they can fall for a hoax. In any case, I’ve put out my own feelers to confirm the existence of the remake. Until then, I’d recommend taking the news with a healthy dose of skepticism.

What might a Baldur’s Gate 2 remake look like?

It is still completely unknown what the (as yet hypothetical) remake might look like and whether BG1 will actually be re-released as assumed. However, the Baldur’s Gate 2 remake would very likely include both the main game, Shadows of Amn, and the expansion Throne of Bhaal, while the predecessor would include the original and the expansion Tales of the Sword Coast.

The combat system could be a sticking point: While the third installment relied entirely on turn-based tactics, the originals were based on real-time combat with a pause function. In reality, however, this also involved a disguised turn-based principle, which would facilitate a dynamic transitionsimilar to what was seen most recently in Pillars of Eternity.

One thing is certain: the project must be based on new technology, as the BG3 engine from Larian Studios is not available. We’ll stay on top of this and report on further developments in this case on GlobalESportNews as they arise.
