A developer confirms that Avowed’s story can’t end in just one way. And that depends on your decisions

During Xbox’s Developer Direct, the upcoming role-playing game Avowed showed off a lot of new gameplay, including the choices players make during quests.

While their effects were also addressed, the question of whether there will be multiple endings for the story, as is typical for Obsidian, remained unanswered. Now, however, an interview provides clarity

It’s an Obsidian game

In an (interview with IGN), lead developer Carrie Patel reveals that the Avowed story can actually end in multiple ways For Patel, this is unthinkable, as this is an Obsidian game

We don’t find out how different these endings are, how you get them or how many there are. But the developer describes in more detail, how the decisions in Avowed should work and feel:

  • We should be surprised: If decisions in quests always lead to the expected end, it could become boring. That’s why there should also be surprising, yet believable twists and consequences.
  • Scale of consequences: While some decisions have serious consequences for many characters, not every quest should have an impact on the entire world. Instead, we sometimes experience more personal stories that are only relevant to the people directly involved.

Patel finally emphasizes that the same applies to the quests in Avowed as to the world: there would be a lot of experiences to discover, which can differ significantly in tone. In addition to dark stories, it may also be possible to experience more light-hearted quests.

With the latest gameplay, Avowed caused skepticism among many players regarding the combat system, for example. We were also able to speak to Carrie Patel and her colleague Gabriel Paramo afterwards and ask them about the points of criticism. You can read why you shouldn’t write off Avowed just yet in the resulting preview above.
