“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” as the saying goes. Throwing away a working PS5 is like throwing money out the window.

“Definitely a legendary find.” That’s how the lucky finder described his “pull,” explaining that he fished a PS5 out of a trash can in New York.

You can read about it on Reddit in r/playstation:

This is what happened

  • Found object: A gamer finds a PS5 lying on top of a recycling bin in New York.
  • Hardly dirty: At first glance, the console appears to be hardly dirty. The rest of the trash consists mainly of paper and cardboard. On the right edge of the picture, something that looks like a shrink-wrapped game case can be seen.
  • Luck is on the player’s side: The console actually still works. On rebuy used PS5 consoles are still selling for over €400.

The latter can be seen in a picture in which he has connected the console to a TV (in front of an impressive view of brick houses in New York).

Could this be a made-up story? Yes, it’s possible.
The last post before the PS5 discovery was three months ago and refers to an e-bike. It cannot be said with certainty whether the story really happened this way.

The highest-rated comment addresses an important issue: the lucky finder should definitely open up the console and check for insects and pests. Bed bugs are a particular problem in New York (via WIBX).

The lucky finder has already done the right thing and vacuumed and cleaned the console before using it.

More tongue-in-cheek comments:

Someone is going to be really mad at their girlfriend.

Either someone just kicked an addiction, or someone kicked it for them.

Let’s talk briefly about the elephant in the room. A console – no matter how old – does not belong in the (household) trash. Not only can electronics not be recycled as a whole, but the technology contains important materials that can be reused.

If you want or need to dispose of technology, you have the following options:

  • Take it to a large electronics store with more than 400 square meters of floor space, provided you plan to buy a new device. Electronics with an edge length of 25 centimeters or less must be accepted free of charge (via IZU).
  • Take it to the recycling center.
  • Donate old appliances.
  • Sell them to friends, relatives, or online.

Have you ever been lucky enough to find something old in the trash that turned out to be valuable? Feel free to share your stories in the comments.
