Many players are currently frustrated with the unique items in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred. That’s because the unique items have undergone a major overhaul.
Unique items, or “uniques,” are, as the name suggests, one-of-a-kind. The expansionDiablo 4: Lord of Hatredis now changing that—much to the frustration of some players on Reddit and other platforms. For them, this adjustment causes the items to lose their distinct character andturns the search for the optimal build more and more into a pure game of chance.
In the past, Uniques had fixed stats that allowed them to fulfill a specific role in a build. Great if you need exactly that function, but not very flexible. Blizzard’s change seems to be aimed at countering this. Instead of the hoped-for build freedom, however, many players see it as nothing more than an unnecessary source of frustration that is beyond their control.
Uniques are no longerunique
: What players are criticizing about the item changes
Blizzard, undo the changes to Uniques. They should be UNIQUE, it's there in the title!

You probably know that due to a recent change, unique items can now have random properties, just like Legendaries. For me, this is the worst change to the addon ever. I understand that you want to open up a unique item to multiple builds and that there can be some flexibility, but a unique item shouldn’t have both Fire and Shadow damage, because that doesn’t fit any build at all. […] Either commit to all build variants that could work for Uniques, or create three to four versions of them. But a weapon should always deal weapon damage (unless damage doesn’t matter) and so on.
He concludes by demanding thatthe strength and stats should remain unique, just as the item’s name suggests.
Enchanting and Re-Rolls as Solutions
In the replies, the comment garners a lot of support, and afurther post expressing a similar opinionis garnering almost as many upvotes on Reddit. Under both posts, many are calling for Blizzard to at least allow Enchanting if they’re going to throw uniqueness out the window anyway. For user NMe84, the Uniques are basicallyjust glorified Legendariesanyway:
Due to the randomness of Uniques, they’re essentially just Legendary items with a different color. They should at least let us do the same things with them, like using the Horadrim Cube or enchanting.
In addition to enchanting, rerolling stats is also a popular suggestion on Reddit and the Blizzard forums, where criticism is currently mounting. For many, the Uniques in their current state seem far too arbitrary.
If the random stats remain, many would at least like the chance to reroll them accordingly. That would give players a bit more control, rather than rendering the inherentlyvaluable drop
useless.
User ItzOver9knotes on the Blizzard forum that, for him, it’s now all about pointless grinding. You find a suitable piece of gear, but are then punished with thewrong stats
:
Unics now have random affixes, which is terrible. They’re just another piece of gear with no real meaning when you pick up something you need. They complete builds, but now you have to grind more and more for them, and that in an already short season. For casual gamers, this is a disaster.
Counterargument:RNG has always been part of the game
However, not everyone takes such a strict view. Some of the responses also point out to the angry posters, that RNG has ultimately always been a part of Diablo and always will be.
Good items are and should be rare, and perfect loot simply can’t always be planned for. As User Zeckkamentions, for example, that it used to get terribly boring when yougot the same Unique for the thousandth time
. And also1trickanais not fundamentally opposed to the new system:
I think it’s better the way it is now. This way, you’re always looking for a specific upgrade instead of just a GA (Greater Affix) Unique that you end up stuck on forever.
It remains to be seen if and how Blizzard will adjust the unique item system in the future. Generally, players seem to welcome greater freedom and more variety. However, a large portion of the community remains critical of the changes because more grinding and less control lead to a lot of frustration.
Behind Lord of Hatred lies the second major expansion for Diablo 4, which brings the story surrounding Mephisto and Lilith to a close. In addition to item adjustments, it introduces the Paladin as a new class and the Islands of Scovos as a new region. You can find a link to our review of the expansion a little further up. It has been available to play since April 28, 2026.
