Publisher EA is discontinuing two mobile spin-offs of its own brands. The studio responsible for Battlefield will even be dissolved.

Apex Legends Mobile lasted less than a year until EA announced that it would discontinue the game and shut it down. However, Battlefield Mobile, which has not yet been released, has fared even worse, with its development cancelled and the studio responsible dissolved.

What will happen to Apex Legends Mobile?

You have 90 days left to play from the announcement on 31 January, the servers are scheduled to shut down on 1 May 2023 in all regions and Apex Legends Mobile will no longer be playable. Real money purchases have already been disabled and the game removed from the app stores. You will still be able to spend existing gold, but you will not be refunded any money for purchases you have already made.

What is the reason for the end? According to an official statement, after a strong start they were not able to meet their own expectations regarding quality, quantity and regularity of new content. He said they were convinced that it was also the right decision for the players to discontinue the game.

What”s next for the Apex Legends brand? Basically, Respawn is still not averse to the mobile platform and Apex Legends, the statement says. They are looking forward to  future opportunities to serve the players there So another mobile spin-off is not ruled out despite the failure.

For the PC and consoles, on the other hand, the discontinuation of the mobile game has no significance at all, they assure. Apex Legends is strong and will continue to publish updates. In January, for example, the Spellbound Collection event started with a new, old mode:

And what about Battlefield?

Quietly, the mobile offshoot of Battlefield, which was in a beta phase, is also being discontinued. The website (Venturebeat reports) also that the responsible studio Industrial Toys will be dissolved. In the (official announcement) the discontinuation of the game is justified with a change of strategy:

…] Because of our strategy to create a highly connected Battlefield ecosystem, we have decided to deviate from our previous direction in order to deliver our vision for the franchise in the best possible way and meet the expectations of our players. We remain committed to unlocking Battlefield”s enormous potential. We are working hard to develop Battlefield 2042 and are in pre-production on future Battlefield experiences. […]

Whether the discontinuation of the mobile game is also related to the failure of Battlefield 2042 is not explained. The shooter is supposed to get at least two more seasons after the current Season 3, as has been confirmed earlier.

How do you take the news of the discontinuation of the two games? Have you been playing Apex Legends, or looking forward to Battlefield Mobile, and you are now annoyed? Or are either shooters or mobile games not your thing and you don”t care? Feel free to post your opinion in the comments!
