The first expansion for the samurai action RPG takes you to Edo in 1651. In addition to new weapons, the new difficulty level, “Journey of the Sage,” awaits.

The first DLC for the dark samurai action RPG Nioh 3 is titled “The Hellish Uprising” and will be released on August 19, 2026, for PC and PlayStation 5.

The game takes you to the Keian era and offers new weapons, martial arts, ninjutsu, guardian spirits, soul cores, and more—check out the trailer below for a first look:

Plot details and new equipment mechanics

“In ‘The Hell Uprising,’ players travel to Edo in the year 1651, during the Keian era, where they find a castle town that has descended into complete chaos following the death of Shogun Takechiyo,” the DLC’s story description reads. “Together with the one-eyed swordsman Yagyu Jubei and the Spanish envoy Rodrigo, players must uncover new secrets surrounding the Spirit Stones and restore peace. The new open-world setting of the Keian era takes you to a hellish wasteland ravaged by the storms of Purgatory, where yokai, human rebels, and alchemists from distant lands roam.”

In addition to the new features already mentioned, the new equipment category “Hundred Demon Realms Scroll” is also introduced. Enemies occasionally drop these as rare loot. To equip them, you must first complete the procedurally generated battle associated with each scroll.

You can also replay these battles, which allows you to randomly alter one of the scroll’s special effects while simultaneously further enhancing and customizing it.

Increased Difficulty and Current Discounts

If you’d like to tackle a third playthrough of Nioh 3 in the meantime, you can do so on the new “Journey of the Sage” difficulty. Here, certain enemies receive a random curse bonus, making them significantly stronger but also rewarding you with items of divine rarity even after a victory.

To celebrate the announcement of the release date, the DDX Edition of Nioh 3 is available on the PlayStation Store and Steam with a 23% discount, while the standard version is on sale for a limited time on PC with a 36% discount.
