After eight years, Blizzard is forcing the operators of two popular World of Warcraft fan servers to shut down permanently via a legal cease-and-desist letter.

Eight years is an eternity in the world of online role-playing games. For the community of the private server Turtle WoW, these were years filled with new adventures in a familiar world, during which thousands of fans formed a loyal community.

But this journey is now coming to an abrupt end:After Blizzard Entertainment took legal action against the operators, they are required to cease operations. And it doesn’t just affect them: another major fan project must also close its doors.

The End of an Era

How the developers behind the popular server in aemotional forum postthe lights will finally go out on May 14, 2026. At midnight on May 15, the servers will be taken offline.

This follows a copyright lawsuit filed by Blizzard last September, in which a judge recently ruled in favor of the developer studio. According to thecourt documentsreveal that both parties have agreed to a settlement, which will inevitably result in the shutdown of Turtle WoW.

Lead developer Torta addressed the community with wistful words: Working on the project had been the highlight of his life. The adventures they shared and the friendships they formed had made all the effort worthwhile. On October 16, all associated social media channels and forums will finally be deleted. If you’re not familiar with the project: Turtle WoW wasn’t just an ordinary private server that simply copied the vanilla version of World of Warcraft from 2004. Rather, the team took an approach similar to Old School RuneScape and created a sort of unofficial Classic Plus.

This means the level cap remained at 60 and the original lore was preserved, but the game was expanded with new zones, dungeons, playable races, and even new raids.

Turtle WoW is not the only victim of the current wave of cease-and-desist letters. The operators of Stormforgehave announced that they will cease operations of their World of Warcraft servers on May 14, 2026.

Following a cease-and-desist letter and subsequent discussions with Blizzard’s legal representatives, an agreement was reached to stop all distribution of content related to the MMO. New accounts can no longer be created there.

Is Blizzard after the money or its own plans?

Why Blizzard is cracking down so hard right now is a matter of speculation. For one thing, the servers operated real-money shops, which is naturally a red flag for the legal department of a major publisher. It’s one thing to run a fan project out of pure passion, but as soon as money changes hands, the tolerance threshold is usually quickly reached.

Officially tolerated fan servers, such asProject 1999 for EverQuest orHomecomingfor City of Heroes, unfortunately remain the absolute exception in the gaming industry. An open call by the Turtle-WoW team to establish a similar licensing model for World of Warcraft fan servers fell on deaf ears at Blizzard.

On the other hand, a parallel comes to mind: As early as 2016, Blizzard took massive action against the then-huge Vanilla server Nostalrius, and just one year later, World of Warcraft Classic was officially announced.

Since Blizzard has already hinted at its own ideas for a true Classic Plus following the end of the current Season of Discovery, the crackdown on private competition could also have strategic reasons. They are simply clearing the market to make room for their own new-old World of Warcraft content.
