What does the future hold for the co-op shooter Helldivers 2? A concrete roadmap with upcoming content now provides answers.

The co-op shooterHelldivers 2surprises with live service virtues. Although the launch on February 8, 2024 is now two years away, developer Arrowheadhas only now published the very first roadmap with a detailed content outlook.

Of course, the shooter has not remained without updates over the past two years. The team has been constantly improving it. However, this is still the first overview of its kind; previously, patches were released without much notice.

While the all-time peak on Steam is almost 500,000 concurrent players, there are still almost 40,000 concurrent players looking forward to new content. We provide an overview of the planned content and explain why not everyone is excited.

So it goes on with Helldivers 2

The developer recently shared the roadmap onX. Curiously, this is the first post (and content plan) of its kind, two years after the original release. Nevertheless, the players have stayed on the ball:

Today we’re revealing our first major content roadmap for Helldivers 2, which includes upcoming updates, new biomes, warfronts, enemies and convenience improvements coming over the next few months. We won’t reveal every secret detail, but this roadmap lays out our basic efforts as the galactic war rages on.

In addition to the already hefty content updates, the postteases even more major additions in the future. Helldivers 2 is said to be just the beginning.

Why there is also criticism

However, the developers also received criticism in the comments under the X-Post. While some fans are happy about the roadmap and upcoming content updates, others note that such an overview two years after releaseis simply far too late.

Some comments also expressed frustration at how little concrete information was provided. This means that they are only announcing what was already clear. Concrete changes – ideally based on player feedback – are sought in vain.

Some players not only complain, but also make concrete suggestions for improvement. So schreibtNevenoretwa:

Can we expect big system changes? With the failure of the last Automaton mission objective (conquer two planets, kill X cyborgs), for example, it has become clear that we need some form of overarching progression that makes sense. Sure, defending the Over-Earth or conquering Cyberstan are juxtaposed concrete goals, but I think it would be helpful if working towards them were somehow rewarded in the plot.

Some people don’t just want new content, but above all areal sense of progress. UserMike Justicealso notes that he would like to see renegade factions among the humans, which could bring a breath of fresh air into the gameplay as a PvP element by staging raids – thinking a bit along the lines of extraction shooters. Others simply want more bug fixes and less new content,to further smooth out everything that is already in the game.

A summary of all planned updates

Update 6.0 (Machine of Oppression) recently brought some changes– including cyborgs and VOX Engines as new enemy types or the Mega Factories as an additional biome and the Bastion Tank as an additional vehicle. The newly announced updates are likely to follow a similar pattern.

They also deliver new Warbonds (battle passes with unlockable content such as new weapons, armor or cosmetics), as well as additional campaign scenarios, enemy types and more. We will probably find out what exactly is hidden behind the vague descriptions when the actual patch comes closer.

However, even if your comments are justified, keep in mind that such comments usually only represent a small part of the community and that many are likely to be (quietly) satisfied with the new features.

Helldivers 2 is the sequel to the 2015 co-op shooter of the same name, which is played from a shoulder perspective for the first time. Players cooperate as a squad of elite soldiers to save the overworld from an alien threat. Helldivers 2 doesn’t take itself too seriously and doesn’t shy away from spectacular weapons such as nuclear strikes.
