Battlefield 6 is providing me with such thrilling battles that I can almost forgive the lackluster Season 2.

Season 2 of Battlefield 6 is still too small, but I’m enjoying the new map even in a mode that I usually avoid.

It may sound strange at first, but in Battlefield 6, I just want to relax. I love the shooter series because I don’t have to throw myself into chaotic close combat for thirty minutes straight and rack up as many kills as possible. If I want, I can just stay in the background as a sniper, ride along in a vehicle, or focus on reviving teammates.

That’s why I mainly play Conquest or Escalation and leave out more compact modes like Breakthrough. But thanks to the new map, even I am now in the mood for fierce siege battles!

Fighting for every meter

In the first few weeks, Breakthrough in Battlefield 6 was mainly a work in progress. Exploits turned some maps into sniper hell, faulty vehicle spawns caused annoyance, and the capture zones were often designed in such a way that frustrating positional battles ensued without any progress being made.

I didn’t really warm to the game mode at first, but the new Contaminated map has changed that. Fortunately, none of those problems exist here, and I’ve already had some of the most exciting and (in a good way) intense battles in my nearly 200 hours of playtime. In my opinion, there are three reasons for this:

  1. Each sector is unique: Conquering or defending each section feels like a battle in itself, requiring me to adapt to new terrain and different tactics. It never gets boring, and I enjoy each sector in its own way.
  2. There’s space: I never have to limit myself to simply charging blindly at my opponents. In each section, I can also try alternative routes, flank my opponents, and attack them from behind if they don’t cover themselves well enough. The map remains well balanced, and neither defenders nor attackers have a clear advantage.
  3. I feel like I’m in battle: Battlefield 6 is certainly not an atmospheric monster like Battlefield 1, but when I break through on Contaminated, I really feel like I’m in battle.
I advance through muddy trenches and cling to every bit of cover to escape machine gun fire and enemy snipers. As a defender, I dig myself into bunkers and fend off wave after wave of enemy attackers.

I’m really excited to see how the third part of the season, starting on April 14, plays out with Operation Augur, a mode based on the operations from Battlefield 1. Here, I’ll be fighting on two maps: once I’ve captured the outer area of the military base, I’ll move on to the bunker’s corridors. This could make the battles even more exciting, even if they are likely to take quite a long time.

Even though I’m currently enjoying playing Breakthrough on the new map, I’m still not entirely happy with Battlefield 6. The fundamental problem remains that there are simply too few maps that give me that kind of experience in the shooter. The next map, Hagental Base, will be a purely indoor infantry battlefield, which is exactly what I don’t really enjoy in a Battlefield game.

In the long run, I would really like to see Battlefield 6 add more maps to its seasons. But of course, it’s even more important to me that, as in Season 2, the quality of the maps is right. A debacle like Blackwell Fields must not be repeated under any circumstances; I’d rather have fewer maps.
