007 looks nothing like any of the famous movie Bonds in the new stealth action game from IO Interactive, but he looks more like the original.
Who is the best Bond? This debate is age-old. Some can only imagine Daniel Craig as 007, while others still consider Sean Connery to be the only true Bond – and a surprising number also love Pierce Brosnan in the role. The new James Bond in 007 First Light bears only a slight resemblance to any of them.
The development studio IO Interactive chose a young Bond for their storyand designed him entirely according to their own ideas. You can already see this new Bond in the announcement trailer. But what appears to be a free interpretation is actually much closer to the original than the previous Bonds – it was apparently based on his description in Ian Fleming’s novels.
A James Bond straight out of the books
A particularly striking feature of the new James Bond isthe long scar on his right cheek No Bond has ever had this on the big screen before, even though it has always been part of 007’s appearance. In the books, James Bond is described as follows:
- Slim build
- Short, black hair
- Blue-gray eyes
- A
cruel
mouth - Mid-30s
- 1.83 meters tall
- a thin, vertical scar on the right cheek
His physique, eye color, and scar match the description in the book quite closely The fact that he looks more like he’s in his mid-20s than his mid-30s makes sense in context, given that we see Bond joining MI6 in First Light. Whether or not the new Bond’s mouth is “cruel” is a matter of interpretation.
Above all, his hair, which is more brown than black, breaks with the image Fleming had in mind for Bond. A sketch by Fleming shows how close IO’s Bond still comes to his vision:

Fleming also once described Bond asthe actor Hoagy Carmichael, who, with a little imagination, can also be recognized in the new face of Bond.
Who plays Bond anyway?
Interestingly, IO Interactive is still keeping it a secret who will actually be voicing James Bond in their game and who may have contributed to the motion capturing. This is a deliberate decision, becausethe debate about the actor should not distract from the game itself
However, fans are already pretty sure that IO’s Agent 007 is Irish actor Patrick Gibson. The 30-year-old is currently best known for his role as Dexter in the prequel series Original Sin.
At the end of the day, though, what Bond looks like will only play a secondary role. For many, it’s certainly much more important whether the new game from the makers of Hitman is fun to play and whether the story is any good.
But what do you think? Are you happy with the new Bond, or would you have preferred a different look? Let us know in the comments!
