A tiny town in New Vegas is visited annually by Fallout fans who celebrate their love for the franchise there.

Video game conventions like gamescom and promotional events organized by the game manufacturers themselves are often the meeting place for video game fans and cosplayers. These are characterized by crowds, long lines and photo sessions in the middle of it all, but they don’t really have that authentic feel.

This weekend, however, a very special gathering took place that was organized by fans of Fallout: New Vegas themselves. The venue for the spectacle was not just any exhibition hall, but a small town in the middle of the Nevada desert called Goodsprings.

Fans breathe nuclear life into Goodsprings

“Town” is a big word for this little place. In 2020, Goodsprings had a population of just 162, and the former mining town looks like it was stolen from a Western. Although it is so inconspicuous, it has enjoyed a special notoriety for about 14 years, because Goodsprings is an important place in Fallout: New Vegas. Since 2022, fans of Obsidian’s role-playing game have been meeting here to celebrate the “Fallout: New Vegas Festival”

On November 16 and 17, crowds of cosplayers and onlookers gathered again this year. They not only enjoyed Nuka-Cola and mole-rat stew at the Pioneer Saloon, but also re-enacted some epic battles from the Fallout universe. For example, a battle between the New California Republic and Caesar’s Legion:

In a game, this brave band of players moved the flag of Petoria from an episode of Family Guy to Goodsprings. In a well-known episode of the series, Peter Griffin declared his property a nation of its own, Petoria. Its flag has now found a new home in the desert city.

In New Vegas, Goodsprings is, like its real-life counterpart, a former mining town where only a handful of people live in 2281, giving it the reputation of a ghost town.

You wake up in this very town at the beginning of the game, after being shot as a courier in the local cemetery. So for many, Goodsprings is the beginning of an unforgettable journey and continues to bring the community together 14 years after the release of New Vegas.
