The new mammoth project from the Eve Online makers is to be a blockchain game. The community is anything but enthusiastic about it.

The sci-fi MMO Eve Online has enjoyed great popularity for years. Now the studio CCP is starting a new major project – which is already being torn apart by fans shortly after the announcement. The new game is said to include blockchain technology.

This is what we already know about the game

The game bears the working title Project Awakening, as the studio announced on the official blog . In the process, 40 million US dollars are to land on the table from corporate giant Andreessen Horowitz to make it a reality. So a real AAA game is to be created here.

Project Awakening is to be set in the same universe as Eve Online and is to be based on blockchain technology – but little else is known about the game so far. The developers have only made very vague statements so far:

Since its inception, CCP Games’ vision has been to create virtual worlds that are more meaningful than real life. Now, with advances in blockchain, we can create a new universe deeply linked by our expertise in agency and player autonomy. This allows players to act in new ways […]

The community is not enthusiastic

Blockchain is really not very popular with players – Stalker 2 was originally supposed to include NFTs, but after extensive criticism from fans this plan was scrapped. The Eve community is also extremely sceptical about Project Awakening.

Negative reactions are gathering on Twitter and Reddit. Thus writes (José Pablo Hernández) on Twitter:

Ooooooh…. No thanks. Seriously CCP, you guys are going to fail, read the comments. Why do you think a game with blockchain would be a good idea? It’s already a dead game!

(João) compares the blockchain game to CCP’s previous projects:

And another dead project. When will CCP learn that gamers want good games first? Probably going to be another money milking system on top of this. I won’t touch this.

CCP truly has quite a few flopped game projects to show for it: Free2Play shooter Dust 514 survived for three years until it was cancelled. Project Legion was supposed to be another shooter, but it never came out. Then came Project Nova, which also never saw the light of day. So whether Project Awakening will actually be released – especially after this harsh feedback – remains to be seen.

Would you like to see the EVE spin-off or are you joining the wave of criticism? Are blockchain games perhaps not so bad in your eyes, or are you strictly against them? How do you interpret CCP’s statements? Would you look forward to a new shooter or would you prefer a fresh MMO? Drop us a line in the comments!
