The Outer Worlds is actually very popular with its fans. But the new Spacer”s Choice Edition is giving the RPG a full-blown shitstorm. What”s going on?

Update as of March 10, 2023: Now both the developers of The Outer Worlds, Obsidian Entertainment, and the publisher Private Division of the much-criticised Spacer”s Choice Edition have spoken out about the numerous complaints.

This is what Obsidian says: On behalf of Obsidian, the official support speaks out on Reddit and expresses understanding for the anger about performance problems. The publisher Private Division is already guaranteed to find a solution. Obsidian itself developed the base game and the DLCs, but is not directly involved in the Spacer”s Choice Edition, which was ported by Studio Virtuos.

Here”s the full statement on Reddit:

I”m sorry you”re having performance issues with The Outer Worlds: Spacer”s Choice Edition. I understand how frustrating this can be, and I assure you that the Private Division team is working to get a patch out as soon as possible. As soon as we have more information about this patch, we will let you know.

If you encounter any further problems while playing the game, please feel free to send a support ticket to Private Division. They are the support team for The Outer Worlds and we will do our best to pass on any information to them so they can find solutions as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

This is what Private Division says: The publisher has also come forward in the meantime. In the tweet, a patch is promised to be released soon and to fix the performance problems. The patch notes are to be published by the end of next week.

Original post: Better unpack those big umbrellas before you head over to Steam to The Outer Worlds search. The role-playing game from Obsidian has been the subject of a full-blown shitstorm that is spoiling the user reviews. A new upgrade is to blame, the (Spacer”s Choice Edition) – we explain why many fans are foaming at the mouth right now.

What”s the problem with the new edition?

The Spacer”s Choice Edition is a graphics upgrade designed to make The Outer Worlds and its DLCs look better. The upgrade costs 10 euros for owners of the game and does not add any new game content, only raises the maximum level cap.

The price is a point that many people take issue with, after all, in many other games you get decent new content for it. But the real problem is much bigger: according to reviews, the Spacer”s Choice Edition has a miserable performance, even on high-end PCs. And the promised graphics improvements don”t come to fruition at all for many.

This is what many Steam users are upset about in their reviews. The review by bradwm1980 finds much approval, he writes:

3080 ti… 35fps… What a joke! So much for better performance… These companies get away with brazen lies with no consequences.

Steam user lifestorock is also having technical problems and is angry about the (supposed) upgrade:

They should have released the update on April 1. Graphics hardly look any better and performance is for the poop. Stick with the original.

Currently, the Spacer”s Choice Edition is rated “Mostly Negative”, with just 20 percent of user reviews being positive – a subterraneanly bad score on Steam. Some users state that the version runs without problems, but the majority seems to experience severe performance problems.

The frustration of the community is unloading

The ratings of the actually popular role-playing game are also plummeting for the main game: while the reviews overall stand at “Very Positive” (84 percent recommendations), the recently created ones only come in at 52 percent and thus only a “Balanced”.

Here too, frustration with the new upgrade is the reason for numerous complaints. We have asked Obsidian for a statement and add here if we get a response.
