Ubisoft completely discontinues Ghost Recon Frontline, Splinter Cell VR and two other games.

Ghost Recon Frontline ends before it even really began. Ubisoft ceases development. The publisher also pulls the ripcord on Splinter Cell VR and two other unannounced games.

In the current (Investor Report) Ubisoft’s Chief Financial Officer Frederick Duguet justifies the drastic steps with an uncertain economic environment

In particular, Ghost Recon Frontline met with little approval from the public anyway. The YouTube trailer, released on 5 October 2021, currently has around 9,800 upvotes and 38,000 downvotes.

What were the reasons for the termination?

Ghost Recon Frontline was met with a lot of criticism, as Ubisoft apparently missed its own target audience when trying to fill a new division with a well-known brand.

Ghost Recon has always stood for single player and co-op gameplay against AI opponents. The theme serves tactical combat in a modern-military setting. With Frontline, Ubisoft wanted to use the familiar name to place a raid shooter in the style of Hunt: Showdown or Escape from Tarkov, with multiplayer PvP at its core.

Under the announcement of Ghost Recon Frontline, there were numerous disappointed, angry and derisive comments accusing, among other things, a lack of understanding of the fans.

As for Splinter Cell VR, the decision can be explained by the fact that the VR market is still quite small anyway. Thus, elaborate games in virtual reality are a big financial risk, because anything below a megahit can quickly manifest as a commercial flop.

What do you think of the news? Would you have been looking forward to one of the games or is the end of the projects good news for you? Let us know what you think in the comments!
