Minecraft players have been recreating the entire world of Game of Thrones for ten years – and the current state of WesterosCraft is spectacular.

Well, we know that Minecraft likes to be the setting for impressive buildings from other film and game worlds. But the WesterosCraft project takes the theme to completely new heights. For ten years, over 400 enthusiastic fans have been working on recreating the entire continent from the fantasy epic Game of Thrones. And you can not only explore it for a spectacular walk – a full-fledged MMORPG is being created.

This is what’s in WesterosCraft so far

The foundation stone for WesterosCraft was laid on 13 November 2011. For over 10 years now, over 400 members have been building the Seven Kingdoms, which are now over 70 percent complete. So far, they cover over 1300 ingame square kilometres and are thus larger than the whole of Rome. From King’s Landing to Stormcap to Sunspear, all the large and small places from the books and series have been recreated in loving detail.

You can see the magnificent result for yourself in our picture gallery:

Every year, over 10,000 visitors make a pilgrimage to the server to see the mammoth project with their own eyes. And you too can visit Westeros. To do so, you can download the (Mod package) put together especially for this purpose. In the official wiki you will find extensive (Guides) to make your journey to the server as fun as possible. But if you just want to have a look without obligation, the (interactive map) gives you an impressive insight into the current state of the project.

The goal: a huge open-world role-playing game

WesterosCraft is intended to be more than just eye candy for Game of Thrones fans, though. It is supposed to offer a complete playable online role-playing game as soon as the complete map is finished. Furthermore, the developers tell on their website about their ambitions to make Westeros the “largest and most detailed Minecraft world ever built”. The lands of Essos, which lie to the east of Westeros, are also still on the agenda.

Developing a complete role-playing game in the Minecraft engine is absolutely possible, as for example the huge Harry Potter MMO Witchcraft & Wizardry impressively proves:

But other giant Minecraft projects can also make your jaw drop – such as the largest Minecraft city, which brings every PC to its knees, or Minecraft Middle-earth, which we paid a visit to ourselves:

What do you think about big projects like WesterosCraft? Have you already visited the server? What is your favourite Minecraft project? Tell us in the comments
