Known leakers claim the sequel to 2019’s Call of Duty: MW is well on its way. The setting may have also been leaked.

Rumours about a sequel to the successful 2019 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare have been doing the rounds for quite some time. Now they are being voiced again, voiced by leakers who have often been right in the past.

We’re talking about Tom Henderson and TheMW2Ghost, who have spoken out on Twitter. We reproduce what the sources claim and classify for you how likely this is. It’s all about the development status, an ominous codename and the setting of the first-person shooter.

This is what the leakers claim

Tom Henderson explains that Call of Duty 2022 is codenamed “Project Cortez”. He also expects it to be a sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare. So apart from the codename, no new information.

excitingly, the name Project Cortez popped up on a dataminer who dug up this name on Geforce Now. Here Activision Blizzard and Infinity Ward are listed as responsible, which would fit like a glove with a new Modern Warfare.

The second leaker MW2Ghost brings more information to light: According to this, developer Infinity Ward is confident about the development status of CoD: Modern Warfare 2. The game is even “further along in development than predicted”.

The game magazine Videogameschronicle (VGC) also reports about “people with knowledge about Activision’s plans”. They would claim that the sequel to Modern Warfare offers a campaign in which “US special forces wage a covert war against Colombian drug cartels”. So here are possible clues to the setting of the shooter.

Either way, 2022 is still a while away. Next on the agenda is 2021’s Call of Duty: Vanguard.

CoD Vanguard: All info on the Open Beta – weapons, maps, game modes and more

How likely is the info?

Regardless of the credibility of the people involved and the VGC magazine, the information is not official sources. Activision Blizzard has a strict no comment policy regarding rumours and leaks. So take the information with a healthy portion of scepticism, especially as plans in the games industry can change at short notice.

Nevertheless, the information sounds anything but far-fetched. The extremely popular 2019 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare brought the series back on track (also thanks to Warzone), after the sales figures of the annual releases had previously stagnated.

A swift successor would be an understandable business move. If the press joins in the song alongside known leakers and dataminers, the possibility of a CoD: MW 2 in 2022 must be seriously considered.

What do you think about the info? Would you just be fine with a MW 2 or would you want a different title?
