Minecraft is not necessarily a horror game. But a special map from fans changes that: In Ashen you have to escape from a creepy house.

Whoever hears the name Minecraft probably doesn’t immediately think of horror and scary elements. Instead, the focus is either on the sandbox itself, monumental replicas or large-scale modifications, as most recently with Elden Ring.

But Minecraft can also be really scary. For example, in dark caves and without torches, while a creeper sneaks up behind you. Or in the form of fan maps, which provide a truly creepy experience with almost modest means.

Ashen – a horror house in Minecraft

From the 9th to the 11th of April, the Yeggs Spring 2022 Mapjam took place. A competition in which individual creators or smaller teams create an exciting map for Minecraft in 72 hours and compete for a small prize money.

One of the participating maps is Ashen by Reddit users (TheChopper2112) and Ssupersette, which is attracting a lot of attention. Because in Ashen you experience a small and atmospherically dense horror adventure, in which the creators show a lot of attention to detail on the one hand and also use the playful strengths of Minecraft on the other.

But what is Ashen about anyway? In the map, you either land alone or with several other players in a horror house and have to escape. Before that, however, you have to kill a certain creature, but that turns out to be not so easy. After all, it’s pretty dark and dangers lurk everywhere, sometimes barely visible.

In addition, you must never ignore your state of mind. The longer you stay in a dark room, the more likely it is that insanity will increase. As soon as the Insanity bar reaches 100%, you will die and your attempt will fail.

To avoid this fate, you must provide light, for example by lighting candles or setting up new ones. For the latter, however, you first have to capture fresh resources within the map in order to be able to produce new items in Minecraft style.

Try out Ashen for yourself
If you’ve got the urge to try out Ashen yourself, you can download the map for free and venture into the house of horrors. All you need is the latest version of Minecraft Java, i.e. 1.18.2.

You can then download the map itself via (Yeggs Mapjam). There you will also find an overview of other maps that were created as part of the competition and may be worth a look or two.

5 horror games that hardly anyone knows about and are really scary

Back to Ashen: You only have to unzip the downloaded map file and copy the folder into the Saves folder of Minecraft. You can usually find this folder at C:\Users\BENUTZERNAME\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft. Afterwards, you can select the map in Minecraft as usual and get spooked.

Horror in Minecraft? Is this something you think can work or do you still see the strengths of Mojang’s flagship game somewhere else entirely? Tell us what you think about it in the comments!
