The successful shooter series will continue beyond the newly announced VR game. This has now been confirmed by the Metro developers

With Metro Exodus the developer studio 4A Games released the third part of the successful shooter series in post-apocalyptic Russia in 2019. Many players have been waiting for a sequel to the best single-player shooter we ve seen in years ever since.

A new game was announced at the last State of Play, but the spin-off of the series can only be played with VR goggles. However, the press release accompanying the announcement also contains a reference to the next, correct Metro.

Metro 4 is also on the way

No new details on the next Metro can be found here, but at least there is confirmation that the shooter is still being developed. There is talk of the sequel to the main series whose development will continue separately from Metro Awakening.

The wording also indicates that a different development studio, Vertigo Games, has been commissioned for the VR spin-off. This means that the Metro developers at 4A Games can probably concentrate fully on the next installment of the series and have not been slowed down by Awakening

What do we know about the next Metro?

There’s no gameplay, trailers or images of Metro 4 yet, but developer statements and rumors reveal more about the shooter sequel:

  • Will there be multiplayer?  In 2020, the developers stated (in a blog post) that they were experimenting with possible multiplayer elements. However, they assured us that the focus was still on the single-player campaign. It is not known whether these experiments have been continued or abandoned.
  • Known gameplay elements: The well-known industry insider Tom Henderson reported in February 2023 that elements such as stealth, crafting and resource looting will once again play a role. The shooter is said to have been completely playable at this point. However, the announcement expected by Henderson for the same year did not take place.
  • What is it about? It is not yet clear whether the story of Artyom and his friends will be continued. In a blog post however, the developers stated that they had rethought the game’s story after the outbreak of the Ukraine war. The themes of Metro such as power, politics and tyranny are now part of their daily lives and are to become part of the game in a new way.

When the next Metro could be released is not yet clear. As some developers from 4A Games also worked in a studio in Kiev, development may have been delayed by the war in Ukraine. Read Alexander Krützfeldt’s column to find out why it’s still worth playing Metro Exodus from 2019
