“Empire of the Ants” is a new strategy game based on Unreal Engine 5, whose trailer promises photorealistic in-game graphics.

In the course of the GDC 2024 (Game Developers Conference), which will be held in San Francisco from March 18 to 22, individual studios will also be bringing along some impressive trailers

This also includes French publisher Microids, who have brought along a new preview video for the real-time strategy game “Empire of the Ants”. The special thing about it: Based on the Unreal Engine 5, the game aims to shine with “photorealistic graphics.”

A quick note to the arachnophobes among you: In the video embedded below, a very realistic-looking jumping spider (Salticidae) appears for a few seconds at 0:56 minutes.

The most important things in a nutshell

  • New trailer for the real-time strategy game Empire of the Ants shown at GDC 2024
  • Unreal Engine 5 provides “photorealistic graphics”
  • Based on the French science fiction novel “Les Fourmis” by Bernard Werber
  • Planned release for PC, Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S this year

French novel as a template – for the second time

Empire of the Ants itself is based on the 1991 science fiction novel “Les Fourmis” by Bernard Werber

Curiously, this year’s strategy game is not the first time that Microids has chosen the novel as the basis for a game: Back in April 2000, the French publisher released such a title, also called Empire of the Ants.

In the 24 years since this first release, a lot has happened on a technical level, which can be seen in this GDC trailer.

You can find the in-game graphics in all their UE5 glory here:

In the strategy game, a single ant is controlled from a third-person perspective and explores the photorealistic environment as this ant.

At the same time, the colony is protected from enemy animals in real-time battles and expanded with the help of collected resources. In addition to a single-player campaign, there will also be an unspecified multiplayer mode.

However, Microids did not reveal when this will be the case; a release date for Empire of the Ants has not yet been set. A release is planned for this year for PC as well as Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

What do you think of the trailer for Empire of the Ants? Can Microid deliver on its promise of “photorealistic graphics”? Let us know in the comments below
