There are many exciting medieval games coming out on Steam in 2022 and 2023 that hardly anyone knows about. We”ve got the best insider tips for you.

Yes, sci-fi, cyberpunk and fantasy are a fine thing. But there”s one setting we always return to: the good (middle) old Middle Ages. Whether it”s role-playing, strategy or something completely different, we love this dark, raw and fascinating era in all genres.

But besides the big upcoming medieval hits like A Plague Tale 2 or Manor Lords, there are also some gems hiding on Steam that hardly anyone has on their radar. We have dug up the most exciting upcoming medieval secret tips for your wish list. Have fun browsing!

Blight: Survival

For fans of: Horror, survival, co-op, knights, fancy graphics.
Release: not yet known
Developer: Haenir Studio
(Go to Steam page)

Blight: Survival flaunts at first glance its deadly chic graphics in the Unreal Engine 5. Rarely have bloody knight”s armour looked so great. But what is actually behind the dirty, beautiful façade? An unusual genre mix, we can reveal that much!

Survival horror gameplay à la Resi meets co-op and the Middle Ages. The combat system is supposed to be oriented on Mordhau or Chivalry 2 and thus concentrate on directional attacking and blocking with your swords.

Renown

For fans of: Survival, base building, multiplayer, knights, fancy graphics.
Release: 2023
Developer: RDBL Studios
(Go to Steam page)

Our next tip also focuses on knights and survival: Renown combines the combat system from Chivalry with survival and base building à la Valheim and lets you experience it all in PvP multiplayer. You collect materials such as stones and wood and build villages, towns and castles together with your clan – at least that”s the plan.

Plague Lords

For fans of: Turn-based strategy, city building, gritty medieval, plague setting.
Release: 2022
Developer: Red Unit Studios
(Go to Steam page)

Plague Lords puts us in the genre that many of us probably prefer to see in a medieval setting: City-building! However, this is about much more than raising and managing a city in times of the Black Plague.

Plague Lords also tells a story about the mysterious disappearance of several inhabitants and lets you fight tactical turn battles. There is also currently a free demo available on Steam for those who want to give the unusual mix a try.

Pentiment

For fans of: Story games, adventures, German medieval settings.
Release: November 2022
Developer: Obsidian Entertainment
(Go to Steam page)

Pentiment is probably the last game you”d expect from the marriage of publishing giant Microsoft and role-playing experts Obsidian – but here we are. Pentiment will be a story adventure set in medieval Upper Bavaria, where you”ll be asked to solve a mysterious murder in a very leisurely way, with no action combat.

Crown Wars: The Black Prince

For fans of: Turn-based strategy, role-playing games, base building, diplomacy.
Release: 2023
Developer: Artefacts Studio
(Go to Steam page)

The ingredients of Crown Wars: The Black Prince sound almost too good to be true: tactical turn-based strategy, a dash of role-playing, a setting in the Hundred Years War, a rich noble family and a mysterious cult.

Here you are not only supposed to improve your castle and protect it from hostile factions, but also use diplomatic skills to build your relationships with other families.

Medieval Farmer Simulator

For fans of: Simulators, Farming, Farming Games, Survival, Medieval Dynasty.
Release: not yet known
Developer: GameHunters
(Go to Steam page)

Heroes in shining armour, epic sword fights, castle sieges – sometimes medieval times in games seem like one big adventure. But does anyone ever think about who is tilling the fields and looking after the pigs in the meantime? Yes, you do – in Medieval Farmer Simulator!

There you can get to know the contemplative side of the Middle Ages, cultivate your fields, raise livestock and maintain your historical agricultural machinery. It”s like a mixture of the Farming Simulator and Medieval Dynasty. By the way, the Medieval Farmer Simulator comes from PlayWay, the gigantic publisher of farming games, but hardly anyone knows it!

Knights of Honor 2: Sovereign

For fans of: Global Strategy, Diplomacy, Total War.
Release: 2021
Developer: Black Sea Games
(Go to Steam page)

Do you love the Middle Ages so much that you”re a bit hoping they never ended? Alright, in reality we probably don”t want to live in an endless plague with poor healthcare and tyrannical kings, but at least in Knights of Honor 2: Sovereign the dream of the never-ending Middle Ages comes true.

It transports you to an alternate timeline where innovation never ushered in a new era and is a mix of global strategy à la Crusader Kings and Total War-style real-time battles.

Inculinati

For fans of: Turn-based strategy, Illustrative artstyles, Roguelites, Humour.
Release: 2022
Developer: Yaza Games
(Go to Steam page)

Do you also know those completely absurd illustrations from the Middle Ages, of which you can”t really tell today whether someone really meant them seriously? To make matters worse, the strategy game Inkulinati brings them to life, so that all of a sudden, rabbit”s butts are fighting against dogs with swords.

This could not only be an exciting strategy game, it also takes the Middle Ages for a ride with a refreshing dose of wit. In addition, there is the illustrative style that was already convincing in the alchemy sim Potion Craft.

Siege of Irdor

For fans of: City building, real-time strategy, sandbox gameplay.
Release: 2022
Developer: HardCodeWay
(Go to Steam page)

If you can”t get enough of the Stronghold formula (build a lovely fortress by day, get overrun by night), then Siege of Irdor might be something for you, combining medievalism with dark fantasy.

In it, you build and manage your buildings and watch over your resources to survive the onslaught of the armies of darkness in pausable real-time battles. A change of seasons and random events are supposed to add a bit of spice.

What do you think of our medieval secret tips? Anything for your wish list? Do you have any other recommendations for unknown games? We look forward to your answers in the comments!
