The Molasses Flood studio”s Sirius multiplayer project will have to start from scratch. CD Projekt Red now provides additional context to the decision.

An official multiplayer game in the Witcher universe is indeed coming someday. The emphasis is on someday, because we may have to wait a long time for Project Sirius from developer studio The Molasses Flood.

Once again

As CD Projekt Red now confirms, the development of the planned title will indeed be put on hold. That”s according to the (recent investor conference) in which CEO Adam Kicinski provides additional context to the decision:

I am aware that it is not great to hear from a company that one of their projects is being re-evaluated. But at the same time, we have to experiment and show enough courage to take a new path if we want to remain innovative. We have to take the right course and not lose control of it – especially when it comes to a project by one of our new studios in the family, whose direction is also new to us. It is better that we cut our costs early and start afresh than to continue like this.

No surprise: That development on Project Sirius will be restarted was foreshadowed: We reported that The Molasses Flood would have to go back to the drawing board regarding the spin-off, and cost reasons were probably the deciding factor.

(Fighting monsters in co-op instead of solo? Project Sirius could become a kind of Witcher Division).

What we know so far about Project Sirius

What is Project Sirius anyway? Project Sirius is supposed to be a multiplayer game set in the Witcher universe, but it is not being developed by CD Projekt Red itself, but by The Molasses Flood (The Flame in the Flood, Drake Hollow). There are currently a total of six new Witcher games in the works or in planning.

There are currently no concrete details about Project Sirius. All we know is that the game will not only appeal to role-playing fans, but to a broader audience. Currently we can speculate that Sirius will be a kind of Witcher-Division with co-op, PvE, class system, procedural elements and comic-like graphics.

In addition to Project Sirius, a new Witcher trilogy, a remake of the very first Witcher RPG and an entirely new brand from CD Projekt Red are all slated for release in the coming years. Meanwhile, the studio is also working on the big Cyberpunk 2077 expansion Phantom Liberty and a full-fledged sequel.

What do you think a multiplayer game in the Witcher universe needs to look like? What are your hopes and expectations for Project Sirius? Let us know what you think in the comments!
