CD Projekt Red is giving away the major remaster to owners of The Witcher 3. Here’s how to get the remaster on PC, PS5, Xbox, and Switch 2.

At gamescom Opening Night Live, CD Projekt Red announced The Witcher 3: Remastered.The remaster is set to release on September 29, 2026, and is free for all owners of the original, regardless of which platform you own the RPG on. This even applies to versions of The Witcher 3 on PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.

We’ll explain exactly how the free upgrade for The Witcher 3 Remastered works on all platforms:

    Remaster Upgrade on Switch 2

    If you own the Switch version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, you can get The Witcher 3: Remasteredfor free on the Nintendo Switch 2. There are only minor differences depending on whether you own the digital or physical version of the RPG:

    • Digital Version:If you have a digital version of the game, you can download the remaster for free right now fromNintendo eShop. You’ll then get access to the remaster right on launch day.

    • Physical Version:If you own the original as a physical copy, you won’t be left empty-handed. CD Projekt Red has clarified on X that you can claim the free upgrade upon release on September 29.

    In addition,exclusive features for the Nintendo Switch 2were announced. Exactly what these entail is still unclear at this time.

    Remaster Upgrade for PS5

    If you own The Witcher 3 on PS4 or PS5, you’ll get the remaster for free on September 29.You don’t need to do anything—just wait for the launch and download the new version. There will also be support forPlayStation 5 Pro

    The two expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, are currently unavailable on the PlayStation Store. However, since The Witcher 3 Remastered includes both add-ons, you don’t need to worry. You can play both expansions via the remastered version.Keep in mind that the remaster can only be played on the PS5.

    Remaster Upgrade on Xbox Series X/S

    If you own The Witcher 3 on Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S, you can also download the remasterfor free from the Xbox Store on September 29.

    The two expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, are currently available for free in the Xbox Store:

    If you don’t have them yet, you can unlock them on your account right now. This means you can also play the expansions on Xbox One, provided you own the main game.However, the remaster will only be available on the Series X/S.

    Remaster Upgrade on Steam and GOG

    If you own The Witcher 3 onSteam or GOGif you own it, you should now find The Witcher 3 – Complete Editionin your library. This version already includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. The Complete Edition has replaced the older versions in the stores—you can no longer purchase the expansions or the main game separately.

    On September 29, The Witcher 3 – Complete Edition will beupgraded for free to The Witcher 3: Remasteredand you’ll be able to download the remastered version.

    What’s included in The Witcher 3: Remastered?

    The new remastered version of The Witcher 3 offers a whole host of improvements. The graphics have been ramped up, animations and combat mechanics have been revamped, some monsters have new behaviors, and there’s a full-fledged skill tree for Geralt.

    If you don’t already own The Witcher 3, you can still pick up an older version now and gain access to the remaster on September 29. Depending on the platform and current sales, this can be quite affordable. For example, if you buy a used PS4 version of The Witcher 3, you can get the remaster for just a few euros on the PS5.

    The Witcher 3: Remastered is also the perfect opportunity to dive into the adventure before the third expansion, Songs of the Past, is released sometime in 2027—which will likely serve as a story bridge to The Witcher 4.
