The Black Flag remake has still not been officially confirmed. However, thanks to an entry on the PEGI website, the title and age rating are now known.
Ubisoft probably had a different plan in mind. The French publisher presumably intended to develop the remake of the acclaimed fourth Assassin’s Creed game behind closed doors and then release it as a complete surprise, as Bethesda did this year with its Oblivion Remaster.
But then there were repeated breaches of confidentiality regarding the project, codenamed “Obsidian.” Thanks to internal sources, the American magazine Kotaku learned of the existence of the Black Flag remake as early as 2023.
Then, in the spring of 2025, Matt Ryan, the voice actor for Edward Kenway, and employees of merchandise manufacturer Pure Arts carelessly divulged details about the project. Finally, well-informed industry insider Tom Henderson repeatedly provided specific information about the remake, which is apparently being developed at Ubisoft’s studio in Singapore. For example, the new edition will completely dispense with a real-time story outside the Animus and will be much more role-playing-oriented than the original Black Flag.
And although the remake has still not been officially confirmed, its existence is now considered the worst-kept secret on the internet. Now, even more information about the remake has been leaked to the public, suggesting an imminent release.
What happened?
As several relevant Assassin’s Creed experts reported on Twitter, the remake was publicly listed on the PEGI website on December 9, 2025. PEGI is the European age rating system for computer games and is operated by the Dutch Institute for the Classification of Audiovisual Media.
The entry already indicates that the Black Flag remake will receive a red 18 rating from PEGI. For comparison: The original Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag also received an 18 rating from PEGI when it was released in 2013; in Germany, however, the game is rated 16+ by the USK.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced has appeared and has been rated on the PEGI website!
This validates the rumored name for the game and indicates that the announcement is about to happen!

What’s even more interesting, however, is that the PEGI listing already reveals the official title of the Black Flag remake: The new edition is to be called “Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced”, alluding to the synchronization with the Animus that is typical for the series.
When will the remake be released?
Although the entry was quickly deleted from the PEGI website after the leak became known, it couldn’t be much more official than an age rating. The only question that remains is not whether, but when the remake of the acclaimed pirate AC will be released.
Industry insider Tom Henderson and his team go the latest information from a release at the end of March. This would also be consistent with Ubisoft’s recently published financial report, in which the publisher informs its investors about another unannounced title
that is scheduled to be released before the end of the fiscal year on March 31.

So you probably won’t have to wait much longer to set sail again as pirate captain Edward Kenway. The only thing missing now is the official announcement of the remake. A good opportunity for this would be The Game Awards on the night of December 11 to 12.
