Sony could release the PSSR2 update for the PS5 Pro before the end of this quarter.

With the release of the PlayStation Pro, Sony also integrated its own upscaling feature called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR for short.

At the time, Sony revealed that developers were already working on the “next evolutionary step of PSSR.”

The well-known Japanese leaker Gust_Fan has now provided information about the update on X.

PSSR2 is expected to arrive this quarter

According to the information, Sony is set to release the software update, which will be available exclusively for the PlayStation Pro, this quarter. However, the leaker does not specify an exact date.

If the information is correct, a release by the end of March 2026 is therefore possible.

Performance improvements for new and old games

  • Games should benefit significantly from the update to PSSR2. In addition to improved image quality and performance, there should also be visible improvements in the refresh rate.
  • Games that currently do not reach 70 to 80 frames per second would thus be accelerated. The update is also intended to address the occasional image flickering.
  • Classic PlayStation games should also benefit from the new technology. Here, the leaker suggests that they will be playable in higher resolutions.

Until now, PSSR only promised optimizations for specially adapted PS5 games. As a result, classics and PS4 games were left out in the past – unless they were specially adapted by the developer.

The new version of the upscaler is designed to address this issue and automatically upscale and sharpen games without developers having to make manual changes.

Sony has not yet made an official announcement about the update. Tests will have to show how PSSR 2.0 actually differs from its predecessor.

Now we want to hear your opinion. Playing classic games in higher resolution: would that be a reason for you to buy a PlayStation Pro? Feel free to leave us a comment.
