A PC gamer and hobbyist shows how he turned a Steam Deck into a Steam Machine for the living room.
Who needs a PS5 Pro when Valve’s ultimate gaming hub is already in the starting blocks?
While rumors are swirling about an official Steam Machine for 2026, the community on platforms such as Reddit is already showing that the age of living room PCs has long since begun.
From Steam Deck to DIY Steam Machine
The hobbyist, who just a few weeks ago turned a Steam Deck into a mini arcade machine a few weeks ago, is now showing off his new project.
It involved building a Steam Machine for the living room. It had to remain portable so that it could be connected anywhere a screen was available.
The hobbyist describes exactly how he did it on YouTube.
The project in detail
- The core of the homemade Steam Machine is the Steam Deck’s motherboard with all the important components, such as the APU, which has been removed.
- After the plan to use the Steam Deck’s dock didn’t work out, the hobbyist opted for a USB-C hub from Sabrent to serve as the housing. He used a 3D printer to create the missing components.
- Replaceable front panels were also considered for the project. These can be created with a 3D printer and then attached with magnets.
- To improve cooling, a 120 mm fan was also installed. When playing AAA games, the temperature is said to have been up to six degrees lower than with the Steam Deck.
- Information for replicating the project will soon be published on MakerWorld.
The project shows how creative the PC community can be. Whether you want to get started right away or wait patiently for the official release from Valve, the lines between mobile handhelds and powerful home consoles seem to be blurring.
