Amazon is working on a live-action adaptation of the mech action series *Voltron*. However, the project—starring Henry Cavill in the lead role—will not be getting a theatrical release.
Heavy sci-fi action with even heavier giant mechs sounds like it was made for the big screen… right?Amazon apparently disagrees, as its in-house Voltron film is set to skip the big screen and land exclusively on Prime Video’s streaming service.
This was announced by Amazon MGM Studios during an in-house presentation, as reported by, among others,DiscussingFilmreports. Fans’ reactions range from sobering to disappointed; just take a look atXorRedditthrows.

No theatrical release for Voltron, but for Bond
It is not known exactly why Amazon decided to forego a theatrical release for Voltron. However, the mega-corporation is not exactly known for being particularly enthusiastic about or committed to the cinema.
For example, the 2024 remake of Road House sparked a public dispute with director Doug Liman over a supposedly promised but ultimately unfulfilled theatrical release.
At least with James Bond, where the trademark rights now lie entirely with Amazon MGM Studios, fans can look forward to a big-screen release. The 007 reboot directed by Denis Villeneuve is definitely coming to theaters.
What you need to know about the Voltron movie starring Henry Cavill
But back to Voltron:The live-action adaptation of the cult animated series is directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Red Notice, Skyscraper, Central Intelligence). The cast includes the following actors and actresses:
- Henry Cavill (Highlander, The Witcher)
- Sterling K. Brown (Paradise, Black Panther)
- Rita Ora (Fifty Shades of Grey, Southpaw)
- Tim Griffin (The Bourne Supremacy, American Sniper)
- John Kim (Diabolic, Cruel Intentions)
- Alba Baptista (Warrior Nun, Mother Mary)
- Samson Kayo (Our Flag Means Death, House of the Dragon)
- Nathan Jones (Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa)
So what’s it actually about? There are currently no plot details available for the Amazon adaptation. In the original, however, the plot revolved around a team of space researchers who use their mechanical lions to form a gigantic robot in order to take on the diabolical ruler Zarkon. That’s really all you need to know.
