Even before the Switch 2 appears, its predecessor has reached the next milestone: the console recently cracked the 150 million unit sales mark (Nintendo). And the number could still rise in the future.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa has told the Japanese magazine Sankei that the company intends to continue supporting the Switch even after the release of its successor. This is also reported by VGC
This is linked to one condition: customer demand.
What does that mean? Furukawa does not go into this in more detail. There are two possible scenarios in theory:
- It is conceivable that games will continue to be released for the eight-year-old Nintendo Switch for the foreseeable future.
- The Nintendo CEO could also be referring to the fact that certain services will continue to be kept alive, such as the online store or the Nintendo online offering.
Fans are thrilled
Most Nintendo fans on Reddit are celebrating on r/NintendoSwitch2. Although the thread creator has mixed feelings about the news, the comments are largely in agreement: this is good news.
The top comment reminds us of the Game Boy Advance: “Nintendo continued to support the GBA even after the DS was released, so this is nothing new”.
Other users see this as an advantage for those who will not be able to switch to Switch 2 immediately.
I mean – good? Not all 150 million Switch owners will be able to switch to Switch 2 immediately.
As for games,, one commenter points out that Nintendo continued to release games for the 3DS even after the Switch came out. Since these were mostly remakes, remasters, and ports, he expects a similar scenario for the Switch.
