Respawn loses key personnel – and a piece of its creative soul

Major changes are afoot at Electronic Arts: up to 400 jobs are to be cut, including around 100 at Respawn Entertainment alone – the studio behind Apex Legends and the successful Star Wars Jedi series. EA itself is talking about a strategic realignment, but for many of those affected, this simply means the loss of their jobs.

Respawn had long been considered a flagship studio within the company. With fresh ideas, technical finesse, and a keen sense for trends, they succeeded in decisively shaping the battle royale market while delivering cinematic single-player experiences. The fact that this studio of all places is now so severely affected comes as a surprise to many, even internally.

According to a company spokesperson, EA wants to use its resources “more purposefully.” What sounds sober has far-reaching consequences: ongoing projects are being reevaluated, smaller teams are being disbanded, and creative freedom is being reduced. Such measures leave their mark – especially in a studio that has always seen itself as innovation-driven.

The mood among fans and observers is tense. Many are wondering whether these cuts are an emergency measure or rather a preparation for upcoming upheavals. While big brands such as FIFA have recently been struggling, other driving forces now have to deliver.

Titanfall project canceled – focus now on Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi

Fans of Titanfall are particularly hard hit. A new game in the Mech universe was planned internally at Respawn as an extraction shooter with the code name “R7” – inspired by games such as Escape from Tarkov However, the project has now been completely shelved. This means that a possible Titanfall 3 is once again a distant prospect.

According to insiders, another concept was also scrapped at the beginning of the year. The message is clear: only projects with clear prospects of success will be given the green light. Creative experiments are taking a back seat.

Nevertheless, Respawn remains active: Apex Legends is to be completely revamped, including technical updates and new content. A sequel to the Star Wars Jedi series is also still in development. EA is relying on well-known brands that have proven themselves – but the air for surprises is noticeably thinning.
