The next big role-playing game is coming to Steam this week – but so far hardly anyone is talking about it.

Steam has some interesting new releases this week – but many of them are in danger of being overshadowed by the big releases.

While attention is focused on Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and Civilization 7, several titles are being released that are worth a closer look. Among them is a promising role-playing game that aims to impress with its fascinating world and profound decisions, but is currently receiving little attention.

Highlight of the week: Avowed

(Genre: RPG – Developer: Obsidian Entertainment – Release: February 13 (only for the Premium Edition / Steam)

While other big releases are drawing attention, Avowed could be the game that takes the role-playing fans among you by surprise. Obsidian Entertainment takes you to the mysterious Living Lands of the Pillars of Eternity series, where a dark secret lurks.

As an envoy of a foreign realm, you are sent to investigate a mysterious plague – but it quickly becomes clear that much more is at stake. In terms of gameplay, Avowed combines swordplay, magic and ranged weapons in a first-person perspective.

The world itself is not a classic open world, but is divided into large, freely explorable areas. There you will not only find fights, but also profound decisions that influence the course of history and your relationships with your companions.

Obsidian is known for its strong storytelling, and Avowed also wants to focus on well-written dialogue and complex characters. So despite the strong competition, this could be a real role-playing highlight – you can find out more about this in our review, which we will publish just in time for the Advanced Access launch on February 13.

More exciting Steam releases of the week

Monday, February 10

  • Mayhemers (Early Access): Silly multiplayer nonsense in which four chaotic characters have to cause as much trouble as possible by tearing entire cities apart while four guards have to stop them.

Tuesday, February 11

  • The Executive: In this tycoon, you found a Hollywood studio and produce blockbusters or art-house films. The whole thing is playfully reminiscent of titles like Mad Games Tycoon or Software Inc., except that here you make movies instead of games.

  • Civilization 7: The controversial 4X strategy game is released this week for everyone who didn’t at least spring for the expensive deluxe edition.

Wednesday, February 12th

  • Legacy: Steel & Sorcery (Early Access): Extraction à la Escape from Tarkov, but as a 3rd-person fantasy game. You kill mobs and other players, collect loot and have to escape alive at the end.

  • Urban Myth Dissolution Center: In this eerie mystery adventure, you are the newest member of a group that solves cases involving urban legends, cursed relics, and dark anomalies.

    Thursday 13 February

    • Guns of Fury: A slick 2D sidescrolling shooter clearly inspired by the legendary Metal Slug games.

    Friday, February 14th

    • Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered: The next remaster collection contains the classics The Last Revelation, Chronicles and the highly controversial Angel of Darkness in revised form. If you have successfully repressed the game by now, take a look here:

Even if the Steam releases this time can’t quite keep up with the spectacular blockbuster fireworks of last week, Avowed is at least a potential RPG insider tip. But which game is on your wish list? Discuss with us in the comments and tell us what you’re most looking forward to!
