Brütal Legend 2 might actually happen, but to make it happen, an absurd record has to be broken on Kickstarter.
When talking about unique AAA games, there’s no getting around Double Fine’s Brütal Legend. The cult classic combines heavy metal with action, strategy, heavy guitar riffs, and actor Jack Black. And although Brütal Legend was well-received by the press and fans in 2009, it flopped spectacularly at the box office. As a result, a sequel has been considered out of the question until now.
The developers have now taken this up in a new Kickstarter campaign and are stating quite clearly thatthey will develop Brütal Legend 2, provided a certain amount of money is raised in advance. And that amount is astronomical.
Hope or the Nail in the Coffin?
Double Fine Productions is bringing back Amnesia Fortnight. This is anevent
where employees pitch various, often quirky game ideas, and the community then votes to decide which ones will actually be developed. This is how, for example, the role-playing gameCostume Quest—which later even got a sequel—and the tower defense gameIron Brigade came to be.
What does this have to do with Brütal Legend?To make Amnesia Fortnight 2026 a reality, the studio has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $400,000 by October 1. They’ve already raised about $380,000, and the rest will likely follow today or tomorrow. So there’s almost nothing standing in the way of the project’s completion. But what happens if even more money is raised beyond that? That’s where Brütal Legend 2 comes into play.

: In the event that the funds raised in a Kickstarter campaign exceed the original goal, there are so-called stretch goals. When these are reached, there are usually additional rewards for backers. In this case, Double Fine is offering just one stretch goal, and with it, you canactually unlock the development of Brütal Legend 2.
The big problem: This stretch goal is set atan absurd $100 million. For comparison: The highest amount ever raised on Kickstarter for a video game was $6.3 million. That was in 2015 forShenmue 3. The highest amount ever raised was $46 million, and that was for a 3D printer. The chance that the $100 million will actually be raised is nearly zero.
The typically humorous team at Double Fine knows this, of course, and likely added this option primarily for fun. But probably also to show that while they listen to their fans, a sequel to Brütal Legend 2 really isn’t possible. But who knows—maybe a generous billionaire with a penchant for heavy metal and video games will still come forward.
What exactly is Amnesia Fortnight 2026?
At theKickstarter campaign pagefeatures all 24 pitched games, including trailers and descriptions, that you can vote on as part of Amnesia Fortnight 2026. So if you’re not set on Brütal Legend 2, there might be something here for you, too.
In the first phase, you’ll vote for four titles, which will then receive a playable demo within two weeks. In a subsequent vote, a winner will be chosen from these four to be developed into a full-fledged game and published by Double Fine’s new in-house indie publisher, Double Fine Action Labs.
