The role of Kratos must now be recast.
The Amazon series based on *God of War* has just suffered a major setback: Because Ryan Hurst—the lead actor, of all people—was seriously injured during filming, the production must now search for a new Kratos.
The cause is abiceps tear that the 50-year-old actor sustained during a stunt. Hurst has since undergone surgery, but the recovery time for such an injury is typically four to six months. It may even take at least a year for him to regain full strength (via Wikipedia).
What’s Next for God of War Following Ryan Hurst’s Injury
Amazon can’t wait that long to resume filming God of War. While production is currently on hold, a new shooting schedule is expected to be in place by mid-August so that filming can resume at full speed by October.
Until then, of course, a new actor must be found to play Kratos, who will star alongside Callum Vinson as his son Atreus. It’s safe to assume that extensive reshoots will also be necessary: God of War began production back in February 2026, with Hurst appearing in numerous scenes.
This development is also likely to have a massive impact on the series’ release schedule:While a 2027 release was previously anticipated, it now looks like the series won’t be ready until 2028 at the earliest.
It is currently unknown who is in the running to play Kratos.
For Ryan Hurst, this development is, of course, particularly bitter.Kratos is the actor’s biggest role to date; he is best known for his roles in Sons of Anarchy, The Walking Dead, and most recentlyThe Odyssey.In the video game God of War Ragnarök, he even appeared as Thor via motion capture.
Hurst had trained for months for his role as Kratos and, according toDeadline, gained nearly 20 kilograms of muscle mass.
Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander, Star Trek: The Next Generation) is serving as showrunner, screenwriter, and producer for the Amazon series based on God of War. The rest of the cast includes actors such as Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Max Parker as Heimdall, Teresa Palmer as Sif, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.
