Many users on the net reacted with disbelief to the almost suspiciously real-looking shooter Unrecord. But the developers show: It is not a fake.

The freshly unveiled shooter Unrecord continues to cause heated discussions on the net. The first gameplay scenes had gone viral because of the almost unbelievable level of photorealism – real or game?

Some users even came to the conclusion that it was real video footage and Unrecord was thus a fake. How to get this idea is shown by these scenes:

To clear up fake accusations once and for all now, lead developer Alexandre Spindler posted a short clip on Twitter showing his shooter m developer interface of Unreal Engine 5.

Spindler is the lead developer at French studio Drama, where Unrecord is currently being made, and commented rather dryly, “For those who thought Unrecord was a fake or a real video, sorry.”

You can see the development interface of UE5. Spindler stops the gameplay, releases the camera and lets it roam through the level collision-free via No-Clip.

This is clear evidence: Spindler thus clearly reveals that the unrecorded footage is a playable map through which you can actually move freely.

Whether it will eventually become a full-fledged game is, of course, another matter.

Why does it still look so real? There are several factors why the illusion of a real video recording from the real world is so persistent in Unrecord:

  • Exposure time: Through a trick in the engine, brief overexposure is imitated. This makes the light incidence look like a cell phone video.
  • Movement: Since the hands are not fixed to the camera like in most other shooters, but follow the movement with a delay, they look more real.
  • Photogrammetry: By using high-res photos of real locations as level textures, the surfaces in the game look very real – because they re real, so to speak

Unrecord caused some real emotional chaos among gamers – some are completely thrilled by the graphic quality, others feel rather queasy about such real scenes. In our survey we want to hear your opinion!

Unrecord is supposed to tell the story of a police officer on duty using his bodycam recordings. It is about a complex case that requires tactical and investigative skills, according to the makers.

There is no release yet, after the PC version (via Steam) the studio wants to tackle a port for consoles.
