According to well-known industry insider Jeff Grubb, a big comeback is planned for Deus Ex. The goals seem ambitious, but the release still far away.

Deus Ex is coming back in a big way and wants to challenge Cyberpunk 2077. At least that’s what journalist and podcaster Jeff Grubb claims.

He had spoken in a new edition of Game Mess Mornings by Giant Bomb about the new Deus Ex, which is currently being created at developer Eidos. Here’s the clip as a Twitter clip:

What exactly is Jeff Grubb saying?

Grubb admits that talks about a new Deus Ex at Eidos are still at an early stage. However, he says the studio is eager to bring the brand back to challenge top dog Cyberpunk 2077. Here’s a wording:

From what I’ve heard, the studio wants to get back to Deus Ex as soon as possible. They want to challenge Cyberpunk 2077 and do what Cyberpunk failed to do. That’s the idea floating around the studio right now. We’ll see if it happens! It’s still too early to judge how it will turn out. But under Square Enix there wouldn’t have been such a discussion in the first place, would there?

Grubb’s last sentence alludes to the Embracer Group’s takeover of Deus Ex studio Eidos. Original owner Square Enix had announced in May 2022 that it would sell several world-renowned game brands. In the historic deal, Tomb Raider, Thief, Deus Ex and other brands were handed over to Embracer for €285 million.

Who is Embracer? The name of the Swedish company can be read and heard more and more often, because it buys up almost everything that is not nailed down: Darksiders, Titan Quest, Valheim, Kingdom Come, Gothic, Metro, Borderlands, Saints Row and many other brands (and the studios behind them) are now part of its portfolio! In the podcast, we discuss why Embracer as a corporation also holds dangers for us gamers.

How safe is Deus Ex 5?

Jeff Grubb has been a video game editor for over ten years and is considered an extremely reliable insider in the gaming industry and has usually been right with his predictions in the past. Nevertheless, statements like the one about Deus Ex should be taken with a grain of salt.

Because Grubb, like every journalist, is dependent on his sources and has hardly any possibilities to verify them. In addition, in a fast-moving industry like the games industry, decisions can also be discarded within a short period of time.

When is the new Deus Ex coming?

It will be quite a while before Cyberpunk is challenged by a new Deus Ex. After all, Grubb himself speaks of a planning phase, so the title should not yet be in active development.

This is also the opinion of the well-informed gaming journalist and author Jason Schreier. He comments on Grubb’s leak in a post as follows: “Lower your expectations. Eidos’ current most advanced game is a brand new brand. So if they do make a new Deus Ex, it’s a very long time away. “

The last part of the legendary Deus Ex series for the time being was released in 2016 with Mankind Divided. Rumours persisted that publisher Square Enix was not satisfied with the sales figures (link to Kotaku report), developer Eidos was therefore commissioned to develop Shadow of the Tomb Raider, helped out with Marvel’s Avengers and finally released Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy in 2021.
