An Elder Scrolls fan has ported the combat from Dark Messiah to Morrowind, and the community loves it.

The Elder Scrolls fan and content creator Lamppost is currently working on an interesting mod for The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind—and the community has apparently been eagerly awaiting it.

Morrowind is known for its vibrant open world, believable characters, and endless freedom—but also for its rigid first-person combat. Lamppost had had enough of that and set out to port the combat from the action RPG *Dark Messiah of Might & Magic* to *Morrowind*. And the first gameplay footage looks fabulous.

Morrowind Gets Even Better

The combat in Dark Messiah—which, after all, was developed by Arkane Lyon, the creators of Dishonored—is, unlike Morrowind’s, more dynamic, more intense, and significantly more brutal. There’s also the legendary kick that lets you send your enemies flying. Not only does this feel satisfying, but it also leads to plenty of funny moments. You can check out the first gameplay footage of the mod in the accompanying YouTube video by Lamppost:

What exactly was streamed? Lamppost has modified the OpenMW engine—which is most commonly used for Morrowind mods—and incorporated various combat animations from Dark Messiah into Morrowind. These include dismemberment effects and slow-motion mechanics that make the battles feel even more intense.

When will you be able to play? The project is still in progress; the gameplay shown comes from a recent tech demo. In the future, however, it’s set to become a full-fledged mod that anyone can download for free via the usual platforms.

A dream come true for many fans

In the comments below Lamppost’s YouTube video, there are countless enthusiastic fans. You can see a selection of the comments here:

  • Rpground: If this is actually fully developed, it will easily become one of the best and most popular mods for Morrowind.

  • nog6912: Seriously. You’re not just giving Morrowind great combat—you’re giving Morrowind one of the best first-person fantasy combat styles ever. That’s incredible. I have to have this!

  • brrrbrrrk: Back in 2006, I used to think: If only Morrowind had the gameplay of Dark Messiah. The world wouldn’t be the same.

  • someguyontheinternetcdhan: Ever since people started merging games, I’ve been specifically waiting to see this.

  • Hesric: I’m finally going to play Morrowind.

The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind may be 24 years old, but it remains hugely popular to this day. This is evident not only from this project but also from countless others. Among them is a complete fan-made remake. You can find more information about it in the video further up in the article. On top of that, there are various fan-made expansions, one of which even adds over 1,000 quests to the game. All the details are available in the link box.
