Doom runs on pretty much every modern electronic device with a display. Even an electric toothbrush can now answer the question “Can it run Doom” with a yes.

The most important facts in a nutshell

  • German developer modifies toothbrush firmware to run Doom (1993) on it
  • Modified shooter version originally intended for an ESP32 Christmas bauble
  • Control via mouse; the toothbrush itself is not used for this

Doom, released in 1993, has since been ported to countless media. From calculators to pregnancy tests to earrings, we’ve seen some quirky ways to play the legendary shooter

A few days ago, a new option was added: German developer Aaron Christophel uploaded a hack on Github that allows him to modify the firmware of the “Evowera Planck Mini” toothbrush and quickly used it to run Doom on it.

The electric toothbrush from Evowera has a small screen that is supposed to give users tips on how to clean their teeth properly. As a color display, however, it is also suitable for running games such as Doom.

For the project, Christophel not only used a modified version of the toothbrush firmware, but also of the shooter itself. This modification was originally designed for a ESP32 Christmas bauble

In addition, the files had to be compressed further in order to fit on the toothbrush’s memory. In the YouTube video linked below, the developer shows what Doom looks like on the toothbrush.

The classic mouse is used for control, the brush itself is not used to “scrub away” the Doom demons.

This is theoretically possible, as the toothbrush has a built-in gyroscope sensor – and Bethesda added gyro support for the re-release of the classic Doom shooter and the direct sequel in 2020. These re-releases were ported to current consoles as part of Doom Eternal.

What other devices can you think of that Doom could be ported to? Let us know your ideas in the comments below:
