Patch 1.66 has finally been released for GTA Online on PC. This bans the worst exploits by hackers and risks for players

PC players of GTA Online have been exposed to a fatal security vulnerability for the last few days: Whoever ventured into the multiplayer mode of GTA 5, risked not only his account, but also his hardware. One of the worst exploits in recent years allowed GTA Online hackers to corrupt or even cripple both – we reported.

Now Rockstar has finally released a security update with patch 1.66 which should solve the problem. The 300 to 900 MB update (depending on the platform) has been available for download since 1 February 2023. The official patch notes (on page 2 of this article) don’t go into too much detail, but obviously address the problem that has had the GTA Online community in an uproar for the past two weeks.

What you should know about the PC update

Does the patch work? First players have already ventured back to the PC version since the release of patch 1.66 and give a cautious Okay in (related Reddit discussions) . So far, the update seems to have actually banished the biggest danger from the exploits, making gaming on the PC reasonably safe again.

Is GTA Online now secureAlthough the biggest security problem of GTA Online on the PC has probably been solved by the update, players still have to expect the usual hacking and cheating in public sessions. The established Rockstar Insider (Tez2), who drew attention to the security gap for PC players in January, also warns of this.

To wit: If you want to play GTA Online undisturbed on the PC, it’s best to continue making use of private solo sessions. Thanks to the Criminal Enterprises update from summer 2022, most jobs and activities can now also be completed in closed lobbies – a feast for single player fans.

What else is currently happening in GTA Online

The latest content update for GTA Online was released at the end of 2022 with Los Santos Drug Wars – First Dose. This not only brought new story missions and vehicles, but also a mobile LSD lab as an additional income option. You can find out all the information about it and how much money you can make with it in our detailed guide to the LSD lab.

By the way, we recorded the first story mission of First Dose for you – if you haven’t tried Los Santos Drug Wars yet, you can find out what to expect in the following video:

Los Santos Drug Wars is set to continue by the way. At this point, not all new content has been released, however, the sequel Last Dose currently has no release date. As soon as we find out more, we will of course let you know.
