Valheim’s new endgame brings its deadly winter to other areas, paving the way to the final boss of the survival hit.
During ourFYNG Showat gamescom 2026, the creators ofValheimrevealed new details about the major 1.0 release on September 9.
Deep North introduces a massive new biome ruled by the Jotun—but these frost giants aren’t limited to the new area; they’re also attacking other biomes! We explain how this comes to be.
Two New Dungeons
Deep North offers two new types of dungeons that only the most experienced and best-equipped Vikings should attempt to explore:
- Winding Tunnels:These claustrophobic tunnel systems are very long, intricately intertwined, and put players’ navigation skills to the test.
- Merkhalla:This collection of open halls and drawbridges extends deep underground, and the grappling hook from the Mistlands update will be indispensable.
These two dungeons, along with new weapons, crafting options, upgrades, mission objectives, and of course the icy world on the surface, represent one of the biggest biome updates in the history of the survival game. Creative Director Robin Eyre explains:
I’d almost say we went overboard this time. The dungeons are extremely deep… much deeper than anything we’ve done before. And the total playtime for Deep North is very long—about one and a half times as long as our other biomes.

More Crafting and Building Options
Deep North introduces several new systems related to item crafting and base building; here are a few examples:
- Drawbridges:For the first time, you can build fully functional drawbridges yourself to defend your base.
- Snow Construction:Certain formations made of ice and snow in Deep North can be mined and then used as a new building material.
- Frost Forge:A new type of furnace and forging system that uses cold instead of heat and requires collecting molds for specific items.

New enemies are attacking
The new Jotunn enemy species isn’t limited to the new Deep North region: If you shatter an Ice Giant Crystal in the new dungeons, you’ll unleash these new monsters in other biomes as well, where they’ll blanket everything in ice and cold—even the peaceful Meadows starting area, which we otherwise know only as a picturesque green landscape of forests and meadows:
With the new invasion mechanic, random locations across the Valheim world map are covered in frost, and the Jotunn launch an attack. It’s then up to the players to fend off the threat and put an end to the invasion.
“This is the first time enemies don’t just exist in their own home areas but invade foreign territories,” explains Community Manager Josefin Berntsson. “Whoever defeats this threat will have the opportunity to open the gate to Valheim’s final boss.”
The developers aren’t revealing yet who this major final boss will be. So what exactly lurks behind the giant gate in the Deep North trailer remains Valheim’s last big secret—at least until September 9.
