The hardware requirements are brutal, especially for high resolutions with ray tracing. But you should also be well equipped for Full HD.

Ubisoft has announced the official system requirements for Far Cry 6 (release 7 October 2021). And they are quite something, at least when it comes to ray tracing (DirectX Raytracing, DXR for short).

To fully enjoy the real-time ray calculation, you need a real monster PC. But even if you do without ray tracing, the demands of the first-person shooter on the hardware are not exactly low.

The absolute basic requirement for all resolution levels is Windows 10 version 20H1 (or newer) in the 64-bit version and a DirectX 12-capable graphics card.

System requirements without ray tracing

1080p, 30 FPS, DXR Off

The hardware requirements are still moderate for Full HD at 30 FPS:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 1200 or Intel Core i5 4460

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 460 or Nvidia Geforce GTX 960

RAM: 8.0 GByte (Dual Channel)

Memory: 60.0 GByte HDD (SSD recommended)

1080p, 60 FPS, DXR Off

The requirements for 60 frames per second under Full HD are already significantly higher. A Ryzen 5 3600X together with a GTX 1080 is by no means a small price to pay:

– CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or Intel Core i7 7700

– GPU: AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 or Nvidia GTX 1080

– RAM: 16.0 GByte (Dual Channel)

– Memory: 60.0 GByte HDD (SSD recommended)

1440p, 60 FPS, DXR Off

For WQHD it then needs about 20 to 30 percent more computing power than for Full HD. So here it should already be a Radeon RX 5700 XT or an Nvidia Geforce RTX 2070 Super:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X – 3.8 GHz or Intel Core i7 9700

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT or Nvidia Geforce RTX 2070 Super

RAM: 16.0 GByte (Dual-Channel)

Memory: 60.0 GByte HDD (SSD recommended) + 37.0 GByte for optional HD textures

System requirements with ray tracing

1440p, 60 FPS, DXR An

When ray tracing comes into play, things get really steep. Ubisoft specifies a Radeon RX 6900 XT as necessary. This is, after all, AMD’s current high-end flagship. In the case of Nvidia, however, an RTX 3070 is “sufficient”, as the Geforces are still clearly ahead in terms of ray tracing:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X or Intel Core i5 10600

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT or Nvidia Geforce RTX 3070

RAM: 16.0 GByte (Dual Channel)

Memory: 60.0 GByte HDD (SSD recommended) + 37.0 GByte optional HD textures

2160p, 30 FPS, DXR An

Whoever wants to experience Far Cry 6 in 4K including ray tracing needs a Radeon RX 6800 from AMD, which is surprising at first glance, since the faster RX 6900 XT is required for WQHD. The frame rate of 30 FPS, for which the ray tracing cores of the RX 6800 are probably sufficient, is likely to be decisive here, while these are more strongly required for 60 FPS under WQHD:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X or Intel Core i7 10700K

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6800 or Nvidia Geforce RTX 3080

RAM: 16.0 GByte (Dual Channel)

Memory: 60.0 GByte HDD (SSD recommended) + 37.0 GByte optional HD textures

Gleam of Hope AMD FSR

Furthermore, Far Cry 6 supports AMD’s new scaling technology FidelityFX Super Resolution, FSR for short. This should allow one or two frames per second to be recovered without any noticeable loss of quality. Whether it will be enough for 60 FPS under 4K remains to be seen, however. Nvidia’s AI counterpart Deep Learning Super Sampling, DLSS for short, is not supported.

What do you think? Do you think the system requirements are too high? Feel free to write it in the comments!
