Instinction looks phenomenal. But how will the shooter full of dinosaurs actually play at release? Find out here.

We take a closer look at Instinction: What's behind the prehistoric shooter with high-end graphics?
We take a closer look at Instinction: What’s behind the prehistoric shooter with high-end graphics?

The prehistoric days of Turok and Dino Crisis are almost as long ago as the Cretaceous period – at least measured in internet years. Along comes the new shooter Instinction from amber and wants to bring the dinos back to life in a really high-quality way.

But what kind of game is it actually going to be when it comes out in September 2022 for PC, consoles and Stadia? We’ll summarise that for you in this game presentation. Recently, a new trailer for Instinction created high expectations, at least in terms of visual quality.

The video was shot in Unreal Engine 4. The finished game will even use the new (and potentially powerful) Unreal Engine 5:

What Instinction is all about

A lot of info about Instinction has been creeping through the undergrowth for a little while now, plus developer Hashbane Interactive clarified some of our questions when asked.

The graphics: Graphically, Instinction wants to reach into the top dino drawer and use the new Unreal Engine 5. The new code framework from Epic Games can provide realistic lighting with new technology such as Lumen and several million polygons with high performance with Nanite. Instinction will use ray tracing and DLSS to set the scene for the game world.

The picture gallery shows how chic it looks:

The Genre: Instinction sees itself as an action adventure game and puts you in either first-person or shoulder perspective. Shooter elements are a central component. In addition to a single-player mode, co-op fans can also take part in the adventure as a foursome.

The Gameplay: You explore a semi-open game world in which you complete quests. Instinction will not have a real open world that is completely free to walk through. Instead, different biomes and unstable weather will provide variety and a challenge. To experience a story about a supposedly extinct people, you explore the levels and solve environmental puzzles. With a wide range of weapons, you fight against numerous different dinosaur species. In addition, you can ally with some dinos and thus go your way together with them. Instinction also aims to offer extensive weapon modding and many ways to customise the game experience (HUD, character customisation, etc.).

The Dinos: Developer Hashbane wants to bring several species of dinos and other creatures to life. You’ll also meet a small-sized species of human, the Homo Floresiensis. Hashbane is also collecting further wishes from the community. Confirmed so far are:

  • Acrocanthosaurus
  • Apatosaurus
  • Argentinosaurus
  • Carcharodontosaurus
  • Carnotaurus
  • Ceoplophysis
  • Coelacanth/Mawsonia
  • Diabloceratops
  • Deinotherium
  • Deinonychus
  • Dinornithiformes
  • Homo Floresiensis
  • Cronosaurus
  • Mapusaurus
  • Quetzalcoatlus
  • Sarchosucus
  • Smilodon
  • Spinosaurus
  • Stegosaurus
  • Styxosaurus
  • Suchomimus
  • Tarbosaurus
  • Temnodontosaurus
  • Thalassodromeus
  • Triceratops
  • Tyrannosaurus

Who are the developers?

Interested parties might raise an eyebrow sceptically, after all, developer Hashbane Interactive is not a familiar name in the gaming world so far. So there’s no reference as to whether they can even achieve the promised goals. But at least Hashbane already has experience in the CGI sector.

The studio also produces Architectural Visualisation (ArchViz for short), artificially generated images of buildings and interiors. On the (official website) you can see the deceptively real representations. Whether Instinction will be a good game in the end, you will of course find out in good time in the GlobalESportNews test.
