Activision confirms again that a release for Call of Duty is coming in 2023. But whether it will be an addon or a sequel is still not entirely clear.

A new Call of Duty every year – that was the rule for a long time. At least until the release of Modern Warfare 2 rumours arose that there would be a break in 2023 and the next part of the series could not be released until 2024. But the publisher emphasises: There will be a big release this year as well. What lies behind this, however, is not entirely clear.

What is CoD 2023?

In the latest (Publisher’s Financial Report) for the last quarter of 2022, they also go into detail about the strategy for Call of Duty, emphasising:

In the Call of Duty franchise, our teams are working to build on the success of the fourth quarter. Plans for 2023 include even more immersive, cross-platform live service and the next full annual premium release of the blockbuster series.

This wording seems quite clear at first glance: The annual release is usually a new title in the CoD series. However, the wording, which has already been used on previous occasions, caused confusion due to rumours to the contrary, which were spread by, among others, the usually well-informed journalist Jason Schreier!

As recently as November 2022, Schreier was certain that only one add-on was planned for Modern Warfare 2 in 2023, and that it would be developed by Sledgehammer Games. Now the journalist backpedals a bit: It is not impossible that the originally planned expansion will be provided with additional content and sold as a full price game:

Despite this, he expects the 2023 release to be a continuation of Modern Warfare 2, whether it is designed as an expansion or full sequel.

What is happening with Modern Warfare 2?

If a new Call of Duty is indeed released as early as 2023, it might not be the best news for players of Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2, as both the multiplayer and Battle Royale were not exactly well received by the community, and still suffer from many problems, some of them technical!

What is your opinion on this topic? Would you like to see a new Call of Duty in 2023? Or would you prefer an expansion to further support and improve Modern Warfare 2? In the end, do you not care because you only play Warzone 2 anyway? Feel free to post your opinions in the comments!
