The battle for the international ratings has been fought and Age of Wanders 4 leaves victorious. The turn-by-turn strategy has received positive reviews

The turn-based strategy of Age of Wonders 4 is something to be proud of. We already liked the title in the test, and our international colleagues hardly feel any different. They particularly emphasized the amount of decisions you can make with your fantasy people.

Age of Wonders 4: The international ratings at a glance

With a current score of 83 points on (Metacritic), the strategy game is doing extremely well so far. A 70 review pulls the score down a bit, while all other reviews give out at least an 80 score.

What the testers say about Age of Wonders 4

GameGrin is the most enthusiastic about the sequel, with a score of 95, describing a condition that all too many gamers may know:

Age of Wonders 4 is a great title that will have you playing just one more round as you unlock things in the Pantheon progression and decide to play one more match after all.

PCGAmesN author Ian Boudreau also has high praise for Age of Wonders 4:

This is without a doubt the best 4X game I”ve played in years. It features top-notch exploration, combat, and diplomacy, as well as a rewarding and dynamic customization system.

Those who haven”t played the predecessors need not fear, according to But Why Tho author Matt Donahue:

Age of Wonders 4 is a fantastic entry in the Age of Wonders series, offering players freedom of choice. The game is so full of customization that there are unlimited possibilities, with which no two games will ever be the same. Nor would anyone want them to be.

GLHF of Sports Illustrated also sees a clear strength in Age of Wonders 4:

The key word of Age of Wonders 4 is Decision – the game offers a lot of it, expressed in all its mechanics. Age of Wonders 4 is a natural evolution of the series” classic formula and will give both min-maxers and role-players the “one more round” fever, leading to almost unlimited replayability, especially if the ambitious plans for expansions and new content are implemented.

The title also impressed on Windows Central, but ran into technical shortcomings on Xbox:

The breathtaking high-fantasy of Age of Wonders 4 immediately captivated me, and it wasn”t long before I was creating my own personal undead army and marching across the land, leaving chaos and decay in my wake. Despite the complexity and depth of the game, the biggest hurdle for me was the performance on the Xbox Series X. However, it is by no means unplayable, and I suspect I will play it for many dozens of hours before I tire of it. This is a stunning 4X game that Civilization fans will most likely love.

With the positive words, will you grab Age of Wonders 4, or will you wait for a few more of the announced expansions to come out in full glory and help your fantasy nation to victory? And while we”re at it: Which fantasy race is your all-time favorite? Feel free to write it down in the comments!
