The Switch 2 will not only be backwards compatible in some cases, some games will also receive major upgrades with new game features.

The Switch 2 greatly enhances Nintendo’s current console and, with its improved technology, allows things that seemed unthinkable with the first Switch.

The new hardware should not only benefit completely new games. Some titles that have already been released or are planned for Switch 1, in addition to Switch 2, will also be equipped with improved features on the new console.

So far, five of Nintendo’s own titles have been announced to receive a so-called Switch 2 Edition We’ll briefly go over what those games are and what’s changing.

These games are getting an upgrade

At the Nintendo Direct on April 2, the games that will receive a new version for the Switch 2 were revealed. For some, this is just improved graphics, but others are getting completely new features that take advantage of the new possibilities of the handheld-console hybrid:

  • Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom:Both games will get improved resolution and frame rate, as well as HDR for better image display. In addition, a smartphone app called Zelda Notes will be released that is compatible with the two new versions of the games. It helps you navigate the world and share your creations with other people.
  • Mario Party Jamboree: The latest installment in the series is coming to the Switch 2 with a few new features. You can use the mouse to control some of the mini-games or use the new camera to appear in the game yourself.
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land:The new version will get a new additional chapter that you can play after the end of the main story. It will also benefit from better graphics and a higher frame rate.
  • Metroid Prime 4: Beyond:The new Metroid will be released simultaneously for Switch 1 and Switch 2, but only on the new console can you use the shooter with mouse control. In addition, 60 FPS and 4K on the TV are possible on the new console. There are even more FPS in performance mode with Full HD.
  • Pokémon Legend A-Z: The new Pokémon will also be released for both consoles. However, the resolution will be higher and the frame rate smoother on the Switch 2.

It is quite possible that further upgrades for well-known and popular Switch games will be released during the lifespan of the Switch 2. If you already own the games for the Switch, you can upgrade to the better version for the new console. However, it will probably cost you. Exactly how much Nintendo will charge for such an upgrade is not yet known.
