The upcoming update will add official mod support to the game.Larian Studioshas raised expectations high, and the next major update promises to further promote the creative freedom of the community. This will make Baldur’s Gate 3 even more attractive not only for long-time fans, but also for mod creators.

The integration of mod support

The upcoming Patch 7 will not only introduce typical maintenance work and additional end sequences for evil passages. A special highlight is the integration of official mod support. This allows mod creators to upload their creations via a special toolkit, minimizing compatibility issues. Mod support is a significant step that will revolutionize the gameplay experience of Baldur’s Gate 3.

A test phase started onJune 3, 2024, in which selected mod creators can try out the new toolkit This will be followed in July by a closed beta with up to 1,000 PC players who can register for it. The comprehensive evaluation of these tests over the summer should ensure that Patch 7 can be released in September without any major problems.

A look into the future: mods on all platforms

Mod support will be introduced via Mod.io, a platform specifically designed for the management and installation of mods. This means that Baldur’s Gate 3 will only officially support mods that run on this platform. Mod.io provides a central point of contact for users to select, install and manage available software. Mods released outside of this tool kit will also remain usable, but will not receive official support.

Interestingly, Mod.io will be available on both PC and consoles such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. This opens up a whole new dimension for console gamers who previously had limited access to mods. However, the development of new mods will still only be possible on PC, and mod support for consoles will only be unlocked at a later date.

A rigorous selection process

Not every modification will receive the official Baldur’s Gate 3 stamp of approval. Larian Studios has developed a selection process to ensure that mods comply with the Terms of Use and maintain the integrity of the Dungeons and Dragons brand. Mods that are deemed inappropriate or NSFW may be rejected. This curated approach is intended to ensure that players have a high-quality and consistent experience.

The planned introduction of mod support marks an exciting new chapter for Baldur’s Gate 3, and players can look forward to seeing what creative content the community will come up with. With the wide availability of mods and Larian Studios’ commitment to ensuring a quality gaming experience, Baldur’s Gate 3 will continue to shine as one of the most outstanding RPGs of its time.
