One of the most important video games of all time is being re-released. Silent Hill 1, a veteran of the horror genre, is making a comeback.

Many fans had already suspected it, but now it’s official: following the successful remake of Silent Hill 2, Bloober is tackling its predecessor. At Konami’s digital showcase on June 12, a remake of Silent Hill was officially announced.

Nothing has been revealed yet, only the title was shown in a first teaser with the message that it is in development. But since the same team that worked on Silent Hill 2 is at the helm, we expect a similarly extensive overhaul as with its successor. That means:

  • New, state-of-the-art graphics
  • New controls
  • New soundtrack
  • Minor content adjustments
  • However, the basic story, atmosphere, and feel of the game will remain the same.

However, none of this has been confirmed yet.

Good prospects

Before the remake of Silent Hill 2 was released at the end of 2024,there were many skeptics among fans of the iconic horror masterpiecewho did not believe Bloober Team was up to the task. But the developers have shown that they really are big Silent Hill fans who have the technical talent to pull off a remake like this.

While there are certainly some minor criticisms of the Silent Hill 2 remake, it basically offered first-class entertainment in the form ofcreepiness that gets under your skin. This naturally raises expectations for the second attempt and gives us a little more confidence that a solid remake is in the works.

What it’s about

The story of Silent Hill 1 is, of course, set in the eponymous American town. You slip into the pitiful role of a writer named Harry Mason, who is searching for his daughter in the ghost town.

As he does so, he gets to know the initially somewhat eerie, fog-shrouded town from increasingly gruesome sides. Grotesque monsters, a dark past, and a twisted alternative version of Silent Hillmake the search for his daughter a true trip through hell

Why Silent Hill 1 now?

If you’re not a fan of Silent Hill, you’re probably wondering why Konami remastered Silent Hill 2 first and only now its predecessor. Especially since Silent Hill 1 was actually the bigger financial success.

However, Silent Hill 2 is the more popular installment among fans and is considered not only one of the best horror games, but one of the best story games of all time. Silent Hill 2 now has a much greater cult status.

Nevertheless, Silent Hill’s influence on the entire genre should not be underestimated. When the game was released for the PlayStation 1 in 1999, mainstream horror in video games was still heavily influenced by jump scares, zombies, and other B-movie horror characters.

It was Silent Hill that brought a darker form of horror into the mainstream – the often introverted and extremely oppressive psychological horror.
