There have been recurring rumors about remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. Following the mass layoffs at Xbox—which also affected Bethesda—the developer has now officially commented on its own future.

The future of Fallout was shrouded in uncertainty for a long time, butthat is now over. On their social media channels (includingInstagram), Bethesda Game Studios has announced that remasters ofFallout 3andFallout: New Vegasare in the works. Meanwhile, Fallout 5 is in pre-production and, likeThe Elder Scrolls 6, will be based on the Creation Engine 3.

The Future of Bethesda

In recent weeks, Bethesda itself made headlines in the wake of the layoffs at Xbox. The studio behind Fallout 4 and Skyrim also lost several developers, including veterans who had worked at Bethesda for many years. At the same time, renowned journalist Jason Schreier reported that Obsidian Entertainment is now developing a Fallout game.

After years of near-total silence regarding upcoming games in the Fallout and Elder Scrolls universes, Bethesda apparently felt compelled to set the record straight and has now announced in a blog post not one buttwo remastersandanother new Fallout: Both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, which was released by Obsidian in 2010, are set to receive remasters. Bethesda also confirms that it is working with Obsidian Entertainment on a brand-new game.

Similar to Oblivion Remastered, these are likely not remakes developed from the ground up. However, it is not yet known whether similar technical solutions will be used. Trailers, screenshots, more detailed information, or even a release window have not yet been revealed.

Bethesda’s update isn’t limited to the single-player Fallout games, though; there are also brief updates on the studio’s other franchises and games:

  • More content for Starfield:The role-playing game is set to be further expanded withnew stories, gameplay improvements, and more. New Starblood content is also set to be released next year. Bethesda may be teasing a major expansion here, which has been the subject of rumors on several occasions.

  • Fallout 76 is getting a major expansion:Despite layoffs, new content is reportedly coming to the Fallout MMO. Raven Rock, a major expansion, is in the works and is said to be aprequel to Fallout 3. Raven Rock is the name of a secret Enclave base that appears in Fallout 3.

  • New Engine Version:The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5 are being developed using a new version of the in-house Creation Engine. Creation Engine 3 is designed to allow the studio to work on multiple projects simultaneously. However, Fallout 5 is still in pre-production, and the focus remains on The Elder Scrolls 6.

In addition to the many major announcements, Bethesda’s blog post also includes some exciting statistics: Fallout 4 has now sold 35 million copies, and Skyrim has even surpassed 65 million sales. Official figures on mods in Starfield are now available as well: 40 percent of players have already installed Creations, and mod authors have earned $10 million from paid mods.
