Diablo 2: Resurrected – How co-op works with friends

If you don’t want to face the hosts of hell alone, you can play Diablo 2 in multiplayer. All about online and local co-op.

Unfair! Diablo sends armies of demons towards us and we’re all alone! Alright. With a companion you can also fight in pairs, but the mercenaries rarely help us out of a dicey situation. Fortunately, in Diablo 2: Resurrected you can also choose to team up with other, real heroes.

The action role-playing game already allowed multiplayer games with your friends when it was originally released in 2001. And in the graphic remaster, you can once again set off with a whole party of heroes.

We’ll tell you exactly how this works in this short guide.

Multiplayer: This is how you invite your friends

If you want to play a round with your friends, you will definitely need an online character. All you need to do is make sure that the tab at the top right is set to Online when you create your character. Then click on Create at the bottom and choose your class. Easy. Alternatively, you can use any other character that you can see in the Online tab.

The Lobby: Join or Create a Game

Next, you or one of your friends should create a game. To do this, click on Lobby in the main menu at the bottom of the screen, don’t miss it. Once a friend has created a game, stay in the Join Game tab on the right. Simply look for the name of your game in the bar at the top and enter a password if necessary. You can also join any other open games if you feel like it.

Fun Fact: You can also change servers via the game description. But then you'll have to create new characters.

If you are creating a game yourself, simply switch from Join Game to Create Game. Enter a name to share with your friends, a password and set the other options. If you hover over the options with your mouse, they will be explained in more detail.

A maximum of eight players can play together.

Where is the friends list?

A new feature of the remaster is a friends list, which should make it easier to play together with your Battle.net friends. However, this list is anything but easy to find. You can see the friends list by looking in the chat window on the left side of the lobby. On the far left of the input window you will see a button with a few silhouettes – click on it to see all your friends and players you have played with recently.

Clicking on the three figures at the bottom left opens the friends list in the lobby.
Clicking on the three figures at the bottom left opens the friends list in the lobby.

You can also join a friend’s game directly, even if you don’t know the game name and password. This works as follows:

Opens your friends list in the lobby

  • Search for a friend and right-click
  • Whispers to the person with a short message
  • Your friend’s current character will pop up in the bar
  • Simply right click on the character and select Join Game
  • Now enter your friend’s game without a password

Local co-op and crossplay – is it possible?

In both cases the answer is: No. You can’t play split-screen on a sofa at the console, nor can you play together as a PC player with someone on PS5 or Xbox Series X/S. So this is where Diablo 2: Resurrected’s co-op has limitations.

By the way, unlike in the past, there is no LAN support. So you can’t link your PCs directly in Resurrected, but need an internet connection. TCP/IP support has unfortunately been dropped. Also for the sake of a fair ingame economy.
