Paramount Pictures is collaborating with CD Projekt Red on the official Cyberpunk 2077 movie adaptation. Also on board: producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
With Edgerunners, there’s already a pretty successful adaptation of Cyberpunk 2077 on Netflix, but that’s not enough for CD Projekt Red!
Now the development studio is releasing another adaptation of its award-winning role-playing game—a full-fledged feature film—and we now have the very first details, such as Variety and Deadline report.
Here’s what we know so far about the new Cyberpunk 2077 movie
- The Cyberpunk 2077 movie is being produced by Paramount Pictures.
- Lorenzo di Bonaventura is on board as a producer; he is known for his work on Transformers, G.I. Joe, The Maze Runner, Meg, and Madame Web, among others.
- CD Projekt Red itself is also involved in the production.
- It’s worth emphasizing again: Yes, this is a live-action film and not another animated project in the style of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
There are currently no details available regarding the director, cast, story, or even the release date. However, Michał Nowakowski, the co-CEO of CD PR, has at least issued a brief statement on X (formerly Twitter):
We are very excited to have secured Paramount as a future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise. We look forward to sharing more details in due course.
I don’t have high expectations
A real movie based on Cyberpunk 2077? After successful game adaptations like Arcane, Fallout, Sonic, and most recently Resident Evil, fans of the role-playing game should be absolutely thrilled… right?
The mood on social media is rather mixed at the moment. Because even though the announcement offers only a limited amount of details, the community is already taking issue with three different aspects—such as the Cyberpunk -, Movies – and Gaming subreddits:
- Paramount as a film studio: Paramount is repeatedly criticized for its ties to controversial U.S. President Donald Trump and the Republican Party due to its owner, David Ellison. David’s father, Larry Ellison—a billionaire—is one of Trump’s most prominent supporters and financial backers. For many fans, this seems at odds with the anti-capitalist core of Cyberpunk.
- Lorenzo di Bonaventura as Producer: Di Bonaventura’s filmography, as seen on IMDb, doesn’t inspire much confidence. It consists mainly of mediocre action movies that fail to generate much enthusiasm among critics or audiences.
- Where is Mike Pondsmith? There’s no trace of the original creator of the source material for Cyberpunk 2077 in the new announcement for the movie. Whether Pondsmith is involved in the project is simply unknown at this time. But the fact that his name isn’t even mentioned is raising some eyebrows.
Of course, it’s still far too early to form an opinion about the official live-action movie based on Cyberpunk 2077. But in the eyes of many fans, the starting conditions could undoubtedly be better.
It’s likely to be quite a while before the project hits the big screen anyway. Who knows—maybe by then we’ll already get to see the first footage from Project Orion, aka Cyberpunk 2.
In the meantime, Season 2 of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is set to premiere on October 20, 2026. You can read more about it by following the links above.
