What is Edgerunners about? Not much is known yet about the concrete story details of the cyberpunk anime. All we know is that Edgerunners is set in the same universe as the video game Cyberpunk 2077. Edgerunners is supposed to tell “new stories” with “new characters”.

The official press release already reveals that the story revolves around a “street kid” who tries to make ends meet in Night City. To do so, the protagonist of the Netflix series decides to become an “Edgerunner” – a mercenary who is also known under the pseudonym “Cyberpunk”. Whether Edgerunners will be a prequel, sequel or a story parallel to the video game remains to be seen.

Who are the makers? Studio Trigger is responsible for the anime in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. The animation studio should already be familiar to fans of Japanese TV series: Trigger is responsible for the anime Kill la Kill or Little Witch Academia, among others.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is now being made under the direction of director Hiroyuki Imaishi, who was already responsible for Kill la Kill and Promare. He is supported by Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann) and Hiromi Wakabayashi (Kill la Kill). The soundtrack for the Netflix series will be provided by Akira Yamaoka, who almost single-handedly composed the music for the Silent Hill games.
