CD Projekt Red is launching an anime for Cyberpunk 2077: The TV series is set to start on Netflix in 2022. We provide you with all the info on the story, trailer and release of Edgerunners.

With Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the role-playing universe of the developer studio CD Projekt Red will be expanded: In September 2022, the official anime for Cyberpunk 2077 by Studio Trigger is set to launch on Netflix.

When does the Cyberpunk anime launch? Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is scheduled for worldwide release in September 2022. There is currently no exact release date.

Where can I watch the TV series? Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will be available for streaming worldwide on Netflix. It is not known if the TV series will appear on other platforms such as Amazon Prime, but it is also unlikely.

Who made the intro music? Recently, the official opening of the series was also released, which is backed by rocking indie music. The song This Fire is by the British band Franz Ferdinand. You can watch the intro including the cool track again here:

Story & Parallels to the video game

What is Edgerunners about? Not much is known yet about the concrete story details of the cyberpunk anime. All we know is that Edgerunners is set in the same universe as the video game Cyberpunk 2077. Edgerunners is supposed to tell “new stories” with “new characters”.

The official press release already reveals that the story revolves around a “street kid” who tries to make ends meet in Night City. To do so, the protagonist of the Netflix series decides to become an “Edgerunner” – a mercenary who is also known under the pseudonym “Cyberpunk”. Whether Edgerunners will be a prequel, sequel or a story parallel to the video game remains to be seen.

Is there a trailer yet? Yes, a first teaser trailer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was released at Netflix Geeked Week in June. Before we say too much about it, just have a look for yourselves:

It shows how the supposed heroes of the TV series make a deal with the Maelstrom gang, but in reality it is probably a rescue mission. Who are the makers? Studio Trigger is responsible for the anime in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. The animation studio should already be familiar to fans of Japanese TV series: Trigger is responsible for the anime Kill la Kill or Little Witch Academia, among others.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is now being made under the direction of director Hiroyuki Imaishi, who was already responsible for Kill la Kill and Promare. He is supported by Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann) and Hiromi Wakabayashi (Kill la Kill). The soundtrack for the Netflix series will be provided by Akira Yamaoka, who almost single-handedly composed the music for the Silent Hill games.

What happened recently: Patches 1.5 and 1.52 were released for the role-playing game by the Witcher makers, which not only brought numerous improvements, but also new content. What’s next for Cyberpunk 2077: We can’t say too much about the concrete future of Cyberpunk 2077 at the moment. For example, we only know that one player wish will definitely not come true, while the first hints of an upcoming transmog system have already been found. However, fans can only expect the first story DLC for Cyberpunk 2077 in 2023.
